Outstanding, though not really to my taste. The save system is a bit awkward -- I would prefer to just save and quit -- and the UI can be a bit unintuitive, but my main problem is that the game sometimes freezes (usually during/after saving). Not sure if it's my computer, but I don't have this problem with any other game. Anyway, Stardew Valley is a really fun time-waster with gorgeous graphics and music that scratches the farming/progression itch.
Note: base game only, no DLC Three stars is a bit generous, as the *shallow gameplay loop* + artificial difficulty make for a disappointing experience. This is really a shame, because the tactical elements as well as the aesthetic (graphics, sound and music, and world building) are satisfying! I purchased on sale and was nevertheless sorely tempted to refund. I decided not to, as I may enjoy coming back for another run now and then. Perhaps it will grow on me?
Veteran survival/rogue-lite players will probably not find this game too challenging. The crafting and mechanics are straight-forward and satisfying, but not too deep. You do not have to go all the way up the "tech tree" to prevail. The hardest part of the game is learning how to raft correctly. But the charm of it all is undeniable: the art, the music, the theme and story, the way that the protagonist gently strokes the dog's face after docking, and yes, the rafting too! Put it all together and you have a game that is *relaxing* to play, yet still engaging. This is not the best survival nor rogue-lite game that you will ever play, but it is definitely a worthwhile addition to your library. I wonder how far I'll get in Endless Mode...
Beautiful graphics and sound, and a compelling story. Truly, this is an epic game! Tragically, the controls are complete rubbish (mouse and keyboard), i.e., it is absurdly easy to lose control of the character and end up spinning in place. Attempts to compensate simply cause the character to veer the other way, etc. For comparison: World of Warcraft uses the same WASD control scheme in combination with mouse, and I have never had any problems whatsoever. Responsiveness to button presses is not great either, which is especially aggravating in combat. And no, this is not technical lag due to system specs. I like this game, but I can only play it in small bursts because the controls are just so BAD. 2.5/5
