Fast action, absurd genre mash-up story, and some tough shoot-em-up/beat-em-up gameplay, along with the GTA hijacking and fetch quest dynamics. But this game out-GTAs GTA. If you just want to go ballistic and let your inner ultraviolent sociopath completely loose you actually can. RCR is refreshingly amoral, with none of the silly pretentious posturing of those GTA games. RCR also boasts the finest 8-bit throwback chiptune soundtrack album since ComputeHer's Modemoiselle. Fans of humor and breakneck action will find a new addiction in Retro City Rampage. Now, maybe the people who made that SuperJail cartoon will apply their talents to an RCR animated series--one can hope . . .
What a fun game! It's like 1980s cyberpunk with a mix of Steve Jackson Games style goofiness and witty dialogue out of classic screwball comedy. It's amusing to see this clash of styles. Joey is a riot. A robot companion who doesn't buy Asimov's Three Laws and always has some metal lip to spare. Good visuals, too. The city has a fun, retro-dystopia vibe. Voice acting is quite good. I like the contrast between Foster, who sounds like the only American in the game, and all the other mostly Australian accents. Truly, one is lost Down Under . . . makes me think of Cordwainer Smith . . .
