Simply the best way to experience Q II, it looks, plays and sounds great. And for 10 bucks (or if you were lucky enough to already own the original, it's free) there's so much content. Sure, when you think about it, it's a 1997 game with a good facelift, but it still holds well. My only complaint is that some area in the expansions have some difficulty spikes here and there where they just throw more enemies at you for some reason. Anyway, if you enjoyed the modern DOOM games or some of these indies Boomer shooters that come out every month, you'll love Quake II.
I really think that in its time, Diablo was huge, surreal, a true milestone in the industry, but without the nostalgia factor it's really hard to love it : Your character moves really slowly and despite the satisfaction in destroying skeletons and demons by dozen every click feels tedious. Yet, the maze-like structure of dungeons doesn't repel me, I do like to get lost in the church with the discreet and quite glooming music in the background with a few screams here and there. Soundtrack and atmosphere wise, it may be among the very best any hack 'n' slash have to offer, sadly graphics aged poorly, like really poorly despite higer res support and the game is still 4:3 in fullscreen even, it's just a big mash of pixels. I don't think it's a lazy port, it's just half of a remake, but can't deny it's playable. Auto-saves every time you move to a new floor (at least) would have been nice, as I've got killed by skeletons that became weirdly over-powered and managed to evade every hit by the third floor in the church and have to restart it all, it already took me so long to get there, only to restart, at the begining. Maybe I'm too young for the first Diablo (My first H&S game was X-Men Legends 2 on PS2) which makes me unable to fully enjoy this. Hell I've played my fair share of Diablo 3 and didn't enjoy it that much neither. So to players under 30 I recommend instead : Grim Dawn, Titan Quest or Sacred 2. But don't hesitate to check this game out if the discovery of the Hack 'n' Slash genre is really what you're after.
It's clearly not a deep tactical game, first of all, if I'm not mistaken, it's a port of a mobile game, which make the game not impressive by many aspects. Graphics are dated (almost by a decade) ; every weapons sounds the same ; you can control everything with the mouse but it's not always simple, try to move the camera between two phases and you may have moved a man without noticing it and it lacks of being immersive : Ennemies are all the same, sometimes ennemies behind desks are almost untouchable, (just shoot him in the legs ffs) for exemple. The idea of having multiple squads to play with, replayable missions and a lot of creative liberties makes it I think. I would have said 3,5/5 would have been more correct for my review. If Breach & Clear 2 happen one day, they better think about making it a PC game first of all.
