Fallout is the sort of game that, unfortunately, just doesn't get made any more. It's an immersive cRPG with a great setting and a fascinating backstory. Turn-based combat seems like an odd choice, but once you get the hang of it you'll find that it works really well. The only place I'd have to criticize Fallout is its UI and control scheme - switching between "move mode" and "interact mode" is a little unintuitive, but remember that Fallout came out in 1997, a time when you were expected to read the manual to figure out how to play. So be sure to do that! It'll save your post-nuclear bacon!
Freespace 2 is one of those games you can play time and time again and never get tired of. It controls well (although you WILL want a joystick), you have a huge selection of ships and weapons at your disposal, the plot is astounding and develops naturally, and the sense of scale is simply off the charts. Some of the game's largest ships will still take up your entire screen when you're half a world away from you. The dogfights are intense and things can get really FIERCE once the bigger ships come out to play - anti-fighter beams and flak cannons will keep you on your toes while you dive in to give the enemy a real beatdown. If I had to criticize it, and I do, I'd say that there's a real lack of consistency with respect to mission objectives. A lot of missions give you objectives that you can't (and don't have to) accomplish to complete them, but there's no way of telling which is which until you've failed a mission and get to start over again. Still, it's well worth your time. Be sure to get the updated graphics mods!
