While the game by itself is more or less OK, it killed off the story arc of Star Control series. You would be better off playing Star Control 2, and pretend that this game does not exist.
If you haven't played this game yet, I envy you. This game is simply the finest story-driven CRPG ever made. Oh, and the characters...you'll become attached to every last one of them, especially the floating skull and the tailed pickpoket. A tip: Combat is not terribly important in this game, but conversation is. Set your wisdom stat as high as you can, followed by intelligence and charisma.
Those games, especially the Cosmic Forge, are simply unforgettable. They have challenging puzzles and combats, engaging storylines, and uniquely interesting characters. Playing one of these games from beginning to end will be a deeply rewarding experience... Which, I fear, might be beyond the tenacity or patience of today's videogamers.
Spaceship simulators don't come better than this game. Of course, this game was made back when every computer gamer had his or her own joystick (usually a Thrustmaster or a CH Flightstick), so you need one to play this game properly. Some of the missions may feel a little off, but overall the game is very rewarding.
When playing Starflight 2, don't use human crew members. Trust me on this one. (I'd tell you more, but it involves the endgame battle, so...)
