AI War Collection

Shockingly Fun

I truly HATE this type of game usually. I made it through Supreme Commander 1 & 2 about 3 levels each before uninstalling. The micro/macro zoom back and forth here and there just irritates me no end. That said, this is the first one of those games I've even come close to liking. I'm now at 26 hours of in game time, also having spent maybe 4-5 hours watching video, reading online to figure out how to play it, finishing a couple of failed matches I just bailed on after realizing I'd misunderstood some key game mechanic, and then reading more. This game has one nasty learning curve. I'm still not sure if I like it or not, but I'm still going back to I guess that's a sign. What made me stick with it this far is that AI Wars is set up better than most any RTS game I've ever played when it comes to limiting the amount of micro you have to do on each world. Once you learn some of the faster ways to check things, it becomes far less tedious. Even still, the 80 map ones were getting irritating after the initial fun expansion push. I think I'll try a 40-60 map one next time. Looks more pleasant to get a grasp of what's going on.

Alien Shooter + Expansions

The Expansions Are Rubbish

I kind of got these in reverse order. I picked up Alien Shooter 2 Revisited a few years ago. It's the best in the series by far. Alien Shooter Revisited is basically this game with a facelift, a bit harder. I wanted to try this for the expansions I didn't get in Revisited. Unfortunately, they're not worth it. The Fight For Life is the better of the two, but all the new furniture tends to get you and aliens hung up on things. You'll also spend lost of time just luring aliens into shooting each other to save ammo. The Experiment, well it's fun if you want to kill enemies with massively underpowered guns, such as level 1 w/ only handguns and limited shotguns...so it takes forever and is boring. The next level in the school, well I gave up after trying that once. For a couple bucks, the first game is good, but if you're just interested in the expansions like me, I'd say pass. They were more disappointing than the quasi-expansion Conscription which was a real fuster cluck.

Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition

Best Of Its Kind

I played the demo of this one way back when I had a Windows 95 system. The lone fighter flying against the rival army is such a great genre, but sadly almost non-existent anymore. One problem with them, they're too much twitch game play with a single mistake possibly ruining your whole run. I don't want to say Raptor is easier, though it is on the lower levels, but you actually have a shield so you can take a few hits. It even lets you buy shields for more protection, but balances that by making you choose between them and better weapons. The weapons, great. I especially love the auto targeting laser add-on that's expensive but worth it. I was so happy to find the game later on floppy disk for a couple bucks and am considering re-purchasing it just to have it available online if I'm traveling.
