REKKR: Sunken Land

Solid, if a bit underwhelming

I was on a fence should I give Rekkr 3 or 4 stars. I don't feel it really captures the viking feel. Many of the levels don't feel the part at all and also most of the enemies and weapons neither. For my taste this game uses too much of enemies spawning behind you from thin air or monster closets and some of the levels are a bit too maze like. Music is mostly fitting. And sprite work and level design is pretty fine. But yeah in the end it packs a lot of content for the price. Gameplay is solid modern gzdoom gameplay and there is enough challenge. While I think there are better Doom total conversions out there like Wolfenstein - Blade of Agony, Ashes 2063(especially episode 2) or Adventures of Square, or if you want more medieval gameplay then check out Arthurian Legends. I still think this is solid game and worth playing through if you like the genre. If you are not big fan of the genre, then you could reduce a star from my rating.

HUNTDOWN

Good run and gun game

Huntdown has great pixel art and very fitting soundtrack and good sound and voices. Controls are tight which are requirement for this kind of game. Boss fights are fun and not too difficult on normal difficulty. Biggest negative is the relative small amount of levels and level variation. Just going through story should take you about 4-6 hours. Of course there is more for those who want to conquer the game with no deaths and on harder difficulties, but for regular gamers this is someting to consider. If you are a fan of run and gun games, then give this one a go especially when it's on sale.

Original War

Clunky and annoying gameplay

The game was on big sale and I read the reviews praising the game as this great hidden gem. Then I fired up the game for couple of missions and I gotta say that I don't know if these reviews are talking about a different game, but this one isn't great. In fact it's quite horrible. The gameplay is just so clunky and annoying. Graphics are pretty weak. Voice acting is bad. The game has speed selection and normal speed is so slow, but when you speed up the game the combat is hard to micromanage. This game seems to be about keeping your people alive so that leads to annoying saving and loading again which is never fun in a rts game. Maybe there is a decent experience behind all this, but in rts the gameplay is the most important factor and in this one it isn't fun.

Kingpin: Life of Crime

Almost unplayable

I have no nostalgia for this game. There is pretty good unofficial patch to get the modern widescreen resolutions working, but the gameplay is just horrible. Shooting is so crap and takes the fun out of the game. Level design is meh and game is lacking in giving players some guidance to get the gameplay basics familiar. Maybe the coming reloaded version will make this even playable, but as it is, this is not worth it.

Clive Barker's Undying

Unique and solid, but flawed experience

This game has an unique setting and weapons and spells system. However the shooting action itself is lacking because some of the weapons are just so bad and example shotgun is horrible. Same goes with some of the enemies. Most of them just rush very fast towards you and the rest shoot projectiles far away. Usually they can be dealt without much trouble, but there are moments when they just feel cheap because of their placement and spwaninbg from behind and above. Boss battles are also pretty annoying since you have no idea what to do in couple of them until you read from a guide. Level design and story also lose some steam for the last third of the game. Still a worth checking out especially if you like an unique setting for a fps game and are fan of older fps design.

Thief™ Gold

Aged, but still good

Took me over 20 years to finally play this one. It is a classic, but it has definitely aged in certain areas. Especially melee and hit detection are horrible and take some fun out of the game. Stealth is also wonky at times. There are also few annoying levels with maze like structures that end up to backtracking, running in circles and frustration. But after the negatives there is lot to like. The game has great atmosphere. It still feels unique. Story cutscenes are done well. Audio and music are good. Gameplay doesn't require rushing and you can take your time and figure out stuff yourself and plan your moves. And while melee is bad, it's not really the focus of the game and you can usually avoid using it. So yeah it's still worth playig and a good game.

POD Gold

Solid arcade racing game

POD Gold is a solid arcade racing game. It takes some fiddling around to get it working properly, but then it works and looks fine for a game from 97. It has pretty good controls, solid two player options and solid game modes. Nothing mind blowing, but you get your money's worth with it.

Blood 2: The Blood Group

A decent game, but bad sequel

Compared to the first one this is a way weaker game. Level design is annoying and bad at times, game crashes a lot and is buggy. AI is annoying and the challenge come from unfair aimbot like accuracy where enemies can see you instantly and start shooting. Also this game has pretty stupid weapon limit. You have 10 slots, but there are more weapons. So if you already have 10 you need to drop one of the weapons. But still its solid fun and decent game. There are fun guns, shooting is fine and Caleb is solid. If you just want to enjoy and see the came through, I recommend going with easy difficulty. Then the enemy instant aim is more tolerable and you can enjoy the game without constant quick saving and loading.

Jazz Jackrabbit Collection

Time is a cruel mistress

This game is not fun in 2020. Controls are floaty and inaccurate. Screen view is claustrophobic. Great music though. But yeah not so fun anymore. Time haven't been kind to this game.

Requiem: Avenging Angel

Janky everything

The gameplay, graphics, level design, game balancing, special powers, weapons... well about eveything in this game is janky. Lot of interesting elements, but in the end this game is missing the fun factor to survive the test of time. I don't really recommend this game, but it's interesting curiosity to get from sale.
