Mother Russia Bleeds

Shallow Gameplay and Poor Design

Disclaimer - I own the game on the PS4 and have beaten it. This game is a simple beat-em-up side-scroller, but has some issues that leads me to believe it is just a poorly made game overall. The graphics and story are decent, but the gameplay is incredibly shallow. The mechanics are very simple even for the type of game it is and there are almost no moves, skills or combos to learn or hone your craft in. In other words, there are very few ways to deal with enemies. Even when weapons are involved, they mostly all work the same and effectively only provide a couple of more ways to deal with enemies. The most important factor in the gameplay is to move up or down out of the line of sight so as to avoid enemy attacks. Everything else are just minor details. This inherently results in a game where random luck, anticipation and reaction to very few simple attack types determine your performance. If you decide to kick up the difficulty a notch, the whole thing comes down to very simple quick reactions and random luck. A game which relies so heavily on random luck and pure reaction time to such simple and limited threat types just in different sprites can only provide so much enjoyment. I deleted the game soon after I beat the story mode, because there was no more fun to be had from honing such a simple and mind-numbing skill and the random luck needed to keep progressing was a bit too much to be enjoyable. This game serves as a fine example of how not to design a game if you want it to fun to play for more than a couple of hours.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto

One-of-a-kind Gem

This game was way ahead of it's time. It was way too original, way too grand, and way too graphically taxing that it never saw the fame and popularity it truly deserved. And into the depths of time it disappeared, fading into obscurity. This game is a perfect blend of comedy, squad-based FPS, RTS, fantasy, and monster simulator. It has been over 18 years since it released, and I can still remember the hours and hours of fun I had playing this quirky and impossible-to-categorize game. The memories of all the weird characters and their dialogue, the excitement of flying around and building a base while shooting at enemies, the rush of executing wrestling moves as a giant monster, have all been permanently burnt into my brain and it makes me smile like an idiot, almost 20 years later. Of all the gems that may be on GOG, this one has a special place in my heart.
