Never Alone Arctic Collection

Doesn't work on Windows 11

The game is playable on Windows 11, but not with a controller, and the unlockable videos, which seem to be a huge part of the game, don't play. Aside from that, the gameplay is clunky (think worse LIMBO), but the vibe is kinda nice.

The Longest Journey

A bad game that doesn't work

You will have to jump through hoops to get this working on Windows 11. It does not work out of the box. At a minimum, you will need to run it in administrator mode. Once you do get it working, you'll find that the game is terrible. The story is self-serious. It's progressive in some ways, painfully dated in others, and riddled with boring monologues and cliches. There are nuggets of something good buried in hours of dullness. Oh, and it does that thing you usually see in bad anime where your character is offended when sex is brought up, but it sure gets brought up a lot. The gameplay is actually miserable. Unless you have infinite patience and are willing to spend it here, you will be using a guide for most of it. It's trial-and-error most of the time, and other times it's intentionally wasting your time. There will be hours-long stretches where you don't solve a single puzzle, then there will be a massive puzzle that requires you to combine three items in the most illogical way. Pacing, puzzles, and dialog are all awful. There's so much good media in the world. Don't waste your time here.

Riven (1997)

Not a Good Time in 2024

Most of your time will be spent watching traversal cinematics. Each area in the game forces you to watch a 15-60 second long cinematic before transitioning to the next area. A ton of backtracking is required, so you will be watching these cinematics a lot. Maybe it was a good time in 1997, but it makes the game nigh unplayable in 2024. The puzzle solutions are very obtuse as well. The puzzle difficulty forces the player to make logical leaps and experiment to test their solutions, but the time it takes to test your hypotheses makes this prohibitively annoying. I used a guide for the second half of the game, and I'm glad I did. Absolutely not worth playing in 2024, imo. Go play Outer Wilds, The Witness, or The Case of the Golden Idol.
