I am extremely conflicted over this game. It was released in May 2001 and with the exception of the engine and terrain destruction, this game has NOTHING going on that was not done leagues better by its competitors. It feels like a half life wanna be that doesn't know a thing that made half life good. Your red faction allies will die in one shot. Most are scripted to die so hard that if the door doesn't open from where they were meant to be shot at, they will just collapse. The terrain destruction is only fully implemente into the gameplay right at the start. Then it appears from time to time, reminding you of it. The submarine and fighter controls are AMAZING, which is expected when you remember that this was made by the creators of Descent. Then halfway through the game you find the one shot kill enemies and remember that, indeed, this was made by the same people who made Descent. The scripting is bad, the constant spawning of the enemies behind you is extremely annoying, sometimes the game WILL NOT give you a health pack. The pacing of the story?? Insane. For the price it is going at, I think it is a good deal, but don't go in expecting anything groundbreaking, pun intented. the glass destruction was honestly quite nice. Finally I must say that this game has an AMAZING soundtrack, some are alright, others are magnificent. And yet the game will play them at the weirdest moments or not let it have the time to fully get going. Sometimes I would cross a door and the music would suddenly stop, leading to a deep dissapointment.

The dlc adds several features to the main game on top of the new faction that has a fantastic visual and mechanical variety. Even if a more standard campaign would have been nice, the two stand alone story missions are very well made and fun to play, specially the one featuring Sorg the Troll and his adventure back home

I've never played a Heroes game. This was my first contact with this type of game, so I don't know how it compares to them. I have 52 hours as of the writing of this review. I've finished the first three campaigns out of 4. The game is addictive, it is very pretty. The first campaign is the weakest, the next two pick up the pace. Its just missing a better story/character whatever for me to give it a 5/5, but it is SO close to it.

An "honest" review would be a 3 stars. Sadly, I am being actually HONEST. I love this stupid game too much. It is not that good. It is unfinished. There are 6 songs that repeat ad nauseum, transport ships travel at a snails pace. The campaign is... long -ish. The protagonist is a racist. The cutscenes are broken, like, totally broken, just look them up on Youtube. The skirmish mode is... alright? It is so unfinished. And yet... I love it. I return to it. It sticks in my mind. And the fact that it is unfinished kills me.

American Conquest is... great. I just wish it was better. Perhaps the fact that I never got to play it when I was a child (our pirated copy didn't work, neither did the retail copy we were given by a cousin) means I can't position it in the timeframe it came out in. The art is amazing. The sprite work and the buildings are gorgeous. However... controlling all those units? Feels horrible. Chiefs take WAAAAAAYYY too much to train. I could train 120 trash units while training a chief. Then I need a chaman. So I could have 200 more units instead of that. Then you have the limits formations and the fact that destroying buildings is... a mess. Yeah, controlling armies becomes a mosh pit. The music... repeats too much? I wish there was more variation. The sountrack seems to be bigger but I kept hearing the same songs again and again. Idk, I just wish the game was better. I wished it had more campaigns. They were very fun. I wish the "random map" created a random map instead of... the same map always? The Tecumtech campaign as the natives was VERY fun. I want American Conquest 2 I guess. I played 22 hours in like a week. I could play more.

The game is... good. Alright. Cute. Most gameplay stuff that it adds isn't very deep and you might groan at some but when you realise just how short they can be, you won't feel that bad. Although some of the 3d dungeons can feel a little... meh. But at these prices? Yeah, it's nice.
