Heritage of Kings: The Settlers™

Settlers become serious strategy...

Heritage of Kings is fifth game in Settlers series and unfortunately unsuccessful one but... Let's start from the beginning. Games is first Settlers made in detailed 3D, Blue Byte used Criterion's Software RenderWare engine (used also for example im GTA3, kill.switch or Broken Sword The Sleeping Dragon). Entering series into 3D also started radical midifications in graphic and whole game style, this time more 'serious'. And perhaps this was developer's main error. Through ealier 4 parts players were used to nicely animated 2D graphic, funny comic-style settlers animations performing their work etc. Now it's more like medieval serious RTS game. Large monumental buldings (churches, castles), wooden-brick houses and main game goal is retaking your kingdom from evil tyrant's hands. At least economic chain characteristic to settlers are still present (gathering resources, wood, Objectively looking, Heritage of King's is still good game but if sothing isn't broken why fix it? I can give games 3.5/5 points but let make it 4, too bad this games was named 'Settlers'. Also too bad game is sold withaout two expansion packs but I presume they'll be avaiable not long from now...

Might and Magic® 6-pack Limited Edition

Finally chance to play them!

I waited for this long time. To find, boy and play Might & Magic VI - IX isn't big problem. Previous 5 games is another story. I like that kind of classic 'first person' RPG's. Nicely done graphic, climatic soundtrack. Story maybe it's simple but it's still M&M and HoM&M universe so I like it. There is something immersive in this games. Livo long Might & Magic!

Expendable

Pumped with action!

Very fast & very enjoyable. Rage Software always did good action games, no matter shooter or car racing. Here we have another good example of their well done product. Games has what every good shooter should. Well done 3D graphic, awasome soundtrack and F/X effects, dozens of enemies to defeat including big bosses (and first you have to find way how defeat them). Ok, story perhaps wasn't worth much but in this kinda shooters it isn't too important. What is important that game first of all delivers huge amounts of pure fun. And this is why you should buy it!

Ground Control 2: Operation Exodus Special Edition

Harder and faster...

I knew that this game eventually will b avaiable on GOG and here it is :-). For me as big fan of ground control purchasing of this title is just formality' already done... Game for sure is harder and 'faster' then Ground Control 1. It's good that this time there isn't any base building and resource gathering too. Tactics is most important. In GC 1 you had mission objectives to complete, one at the time, Operation Exodus focuses instead is on acquiring and holding (i.e. camping) Victory Points, which generate Acquisition Points (i.e. currency) automatically, and Landing Zones, which enable you to shuttle in troops using the game's drop-ship.. Battle is more rapid and little more chaotic from the one in previous Massive game and it's in some way simillar to World in Conflict. You'll never have downtime, but it's extremely challenging to balance throwing units into the field with the amount of micro-management each of the units requires. Every unit in Ground Control II is extremely specialized, and some quite powerful ones, if left unattended, will just die without reacting to their attacker. The single-player campaign, thankfully, helps ease you along the steep learning curve nice 'n' slow, and even throws in a couple more intimate 'stealth'-style missions to help you get to know your individual units? strengths and secondary abilities better. It even has a pretty neat story, replete with twists and turns. Graphics and sound were very good alread in Ground Control 1 and now are even better. Have I to say more? You know GC series, you will buy this game anyway. Every fan of non base-builidng RTS's should buy it!

Republic: The Revolution

Before Evil Genius there was a hardcore political simulator...

Republic: The Revolution is a simulation strategy game which gives you a glimpse into the ruthless and morally ambiguous world of hardball politics. Game developed by Elixir Studio, you know them by their later game - Evil Genius presented in GOG catalogue. The basic principle behind Republic is actually quite a simple one; you play the leader of a revolutionary faction in the fictional Eastern European state of Novistrania, and must increase your power base by recruiting competent minions and sending them around performing a variety of tasks ranging from support-gathering political actions to violent or dirty tricks on your opponents. All of this is achieved in broadly the same way - you set up tasks for your lieutenants, persuade key community figures to aid your cause, to perform on a timeline. This gameplay mechanic would, quite probably, work very well in a more like sandbox environment - however, Elixir have chosen instead to lead you through the game by the nose, with a sequence of mission objectives which you must achieve. Some people probably won't like this aspect of the game, but we felt that it gave the experience much-needed structure and a concrete set of goals to achieve - and to be fair, you are given a massive degree of freedom in between goals, and can go off and do whatever you like on the map before coming back and completing the objective in question. Make no mistake about it, the rather clunky and standoffish interface, combined with the fact that gamers will be required to actually learn things before they are comfortable with the game might put off a fair amount of people who were initially excited about the game. Republic's AI is very good, so the game will become increasingly challenging as you reach the capital of Novistrana. You'll actually be required to think ahead and plan your moves; and the moves of the opposition; before allocating action points. In addition, the gameplay itself might seem a bit too dry and too intellectual at times. Kind of like chess... Game can get addictive after you've gotten to grips with all its intricacies, but I doubt that, on the whole, many people will be patient enough to give Republic the time it deserves. In short, a smart gameplay concept, coupled with some nice 3D visuals and awesome music is severely disadvantaged by the rather steep learning curve and lack of more personality. I have this weird feeling that halfway through the development the team at Elixir got so involved in making sure all the rules and basic concepts are working that they forgot they aren't making this game for themselves, but for the people out there who aren't all that anxious to devote as much time or attention to their product as they would surely like them to.
