It's MK2, exactly as you used to run it from DOS. Or, if you are new to the game: it's MK2, the game that expanded the roster and mythology of MK1 and turned Mortal Kombat into a series. Yeah it's pixelated, but the graphics are great: colorful and highly legible. It is, of course, cartoonishly bloody, in particular with its fatalities. And it revels in its own stupidity, inviting you to do so as well. While the announcer does wink at the camera (TOASTY!), the characters themselves don't know this. They are deadly, deadly serious about their trials. Except, I guess, when offering friendship presents, or turning their opponents in to a baby, rather than pulling their spine out. The roster is respectable. Whereas MK1 had seven fighters, MK2 offers 12, as it introduces Baraka, Kitana, Mileena, Jax, Lao Kung, and allows you to play as two of the first game's bosses - Shang Tsung and the hidden character Reptile. Sure, a couple of the ninjas' graphics are just color-swapped, but they aren't clones - all of them have their own moves and backstory. A great game, still. Now, if only I could beat those bosses...
