Banner Saga

Worthy, but I felt it a bit flat

I will start by saying that I think buying this game was a good idea, and I am happy to have tried it. That said, I didn't finish it, because basically the game mechanics ended up feeling tedious to me (I completed 3-4 chapters). I was very appealed by this game because I love story driven games and I don't mind strong graphics or effects. In that aspect, this game is a win; it has a lot of personality, it is highly aesthetic and is made with care. It has a good story and characters, implemented fundamentally through voiceless dialogs (there are no video scenes or that kind of thing). However, it is immersive and effectively creates an atmosphere that helps you live the story. The game is played in three different modes: 1) The dialogs. The focus changes from character to character in a movie-like style that helps make the dialogs a bit more dynamic, because beyond that it is reading and clicking your dialog choices. 2) The traveling. You and your company travel across the beautiful and immersive landscapes, and meanwhile different events occur in the form of dialogs (see before) and combats (see below). 3) The combat. Turn based. It was really my first time with this kind of combat system, and I loved it. It feels relaxing (sometimes combat can be stressful in games!) and it is still challenging and makes you feel you have to make an effort to win. It is simple enough that you can get it without having to study, and complex enough that you really have to take care of your actions and have an actual strategy. That said, I am not a good strategist, and I still enjoyed the combat and win my way through it. PROS: -It is a unique game in the way it is built, in its aesthetic, and its setting. It is charming and feels really refreshing. -The story is good and engaging. You really want to continue knowing what happens. -(The strongest point) Your decisions MATTER. They do, and you really feel it. I ended up being taking some time to think some decisions before making a choice haha It is really good in that, so if you like that, definitely it is for you. CONS: -The mechanics are simple, so good as the story might be, there is the risk that it becomes tedious. That is the reason I quit it and moved to other game. However, it is not bad as to not want to come back to it. Who knows, maybe some day... Buy it if you want something different. Buy it if you want a game set in snowy and mountainous locations (Like the north and the wall in Game of Thrones; I love those!). Definitely buy it if you like story driven and having a direct involvement in how the story unfolds. Don't buy it if you like action. Don't buy it if you don't like reading in games. Don't buy it if you don't have patience. Definitely an original and enjoyable game. Hope this helps! :)
