I remember spending countless hours playing this game at home and at friends houses. Even single player against the bots was good fun. Taking turns playing CTF matches against the bots on two worlds and seeing who could accumulate the most headshots before our bot allies managed to actually end the match was a blast. Maybe this is all nostalgia. I haven't played this version in some time now, but I never recall being frustrated by the controls. The maps and weapons were all good fun. While I didn't play too much online in those days, single player was still enjoyable. The bots were challenging enough that we didn't need to play online to have fun. There is a single player campaign as well. The story is basically there is a gladiatorial tournament and the goal is to become the new champion. The campaign has you start at the bottom and work your way up, starting with free for all death matches and then adding team death matches and other game modes like CTF and assault as you progress through the ranks. While the story is basic, it fits the theme of a fast paced competitive shooter perfectly and really, you don't care when your playing. You just want to find the rocket launcher or mini gun and start ripping it up till your the only one left. And on this note, I am not a fan of shooters in general. This and its successor Unreal Tournament 2004 were exceptions, which says alot about how much fun this game is.
