The previous two games were short little resource management RPGs, didn't take more than 5 hours or so to complete. They were super easy. The gameplay has been changed drastically for this one, making you level skills, collect ingredients for food. It takes much longer to get through each area. Some improvements are that you can make camp anywhere and are not required to carry specific foods to use those camps - also you can regenerate more health based on how much food you are carrying. Resources will regenerate, which is nice - mushrooms and things will come back whereas previously they didn't - but it's a lot more grind oriented and frustrating. While the previous two did need something to kind of boost the gameplay above 3 stars, this was too far in terms of changes. After two hours I'm so tired of grinding and annoyed at not being able to move forward that I'm tempted to uninstall.
I really enjoyed this game, but I agree with other reviewers that the timer on quests is very frustrating and annoying and caused more stress than fun. Replay-ability is high though - lots of different paths to explore, lots of different characters to interact with. A lot of quests will have different outcomes based on who you bring with you, which makes it interesting and fun to play.
What drew me to this game was the art deco style, the Bioshock-esqueness of what promised to be an interesting game, even with the low reviews. However, I was not prepared to be seasick. I have problems with motion sickness in general, but my dual screens and high graphics have mitigated most of those issues for me in games where previously I would only be able to play 10 minutes at a time. Five minutes into this game and I was ready to toss my cookies. The rocking of the ship is constant. Even on the purportedly "biggest ship ever built" where there should be NO rocking motion if you want to be realistic - large ships do not rock like that. I still really wanted to play the game though - the beginning and the design was enough to make me want to keep playing, so I looked through the graphics options.... there are barely any options at all and absolutely none that allow you to turn off the ship motion. I went to Google and the forums, hoping someone possibly modded it or found some way to turn off the motion. Nope. So unfortunately, this game is completely unplayable for me. If you are someone who might possibly suffer from motion sickness do not buy, you cannot avoid the rocking.
