Don't Starve is a curious little game that will frustrate you and keep you coming back for more. On sale it's worth the purchase, but it's a small game that is really just a good time waster in my opinion. It doesn't really have the staying power I feel it needs to be a large part of your gaming library. Waiting for a raid in another game? fire this up and burn a little time! They make no excuses for the lack of help you get, and the unknown is really what draws you in. You have some gauges that show you how you're doing, and about what time of day it is, but you really have no idea just how long before you'll need to eat, or when you'll need more fire wood. After a couple days you start to understand just how much resources you'll need, and once you have a grasp on that you'll want to assemble things and come up with weapons and structures that will help you out. If you die, you start all over again... so it's best to take it slow, not adventure very far and get a handle on the basics, and for gods sake... Don't Starve!!
I bought the original edition of this game by chance and had never played this style of game before. I have also not found one that matches it since... The setting, and the atmosphere are just perfect! without going into much detail about the game, I found the suspense and the unknown simply spine chilling. Exploring an old abandoned house should not be this much fun and at the same time so frightening. At the time my office was in the basement of my house away from the family, and I can't tell you how many times I had to abandon the game because I was on the edge of my seat and it felt so real. One of my kids even snuck down the stairs one time and knocked on my door scaring the heck out of me. All of the sound effects, the story, the mystery, everything just comes together perfectly and it's a masterpiece. The only piece that I didn't like was the puzzles... that may just be me, but I didn't like that the game time would not advance until you advanced the story. Maybe you needed to find a key? maybe you wont be able to go to bed until you've completely searched the house and yard? It's a small negative for me and doesn't not stop the game from being one of my all time favorites. I now own both the original and directors cut on disk, but rest assured I will be buying this digital copy to ensure I always have a safe copy.
