Sanctuary RPG: Black Edition

References the good, bad and ugly

A lot of the jokes in this game reference gamer culture, and that's exactly the problem. It also references gamergate terminology and not in a critical sense. The joke is obviously meant to be understood from a gamergater's perspective. And that's bad, real bad. After a few too many jokes of these in the first few hours of the demo. I couldn't in good conscience buy the game after it is clear they cater to the worst gamers, at least occasionally. For me, that's a dealbreaker. If you like gamergate and what passes as humor on 4chan, this game is for you. Otherwise, play the demo first and strongly reconsider if this company deserves your money. The game itself is okay but once the "jokes" stop being funny or even occasionally insult you, it just becomes a level grinder with perma-death.

Reah: Face the Unknown

don't buy this garbage puzzle game

I remember this game from back when it was new. The puzzles are not good, the voice acting is terrible. This game is garbage. Buy Myst or one of the many clones but not this one. It's just not good. Back in the day, the walkthrough for this game was posted on the website of the devs because the puzzles weren't difficult, they were just insane. In a bad way. No clues, complete trial and error from beginning to end.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition

Great game in 2017

I never played this game when I was younger but it was always on my radar. When I saw an enhanced edition, I used that as an excuse to try it. Baldur's gate holds up really well as a game and the enhanced edition makes it a good game in 2017. I know some of the improvements such as quicksave hotkeys, modern journal and zooming. Those made the game playable for me. Would it have been possible with mods? Probably. But I don't really care. This package deal makes the game great for someone who doesn't spend much time figuring out which mods to use, especially not for a new game.

Geneforge Saga

This will be one of your top 5 RPGs ever

One of the better RPGs you'll ever play. Gameplay is pretty much fallout's turn based system but with Baldur's Gate team tactics. The story easily surpases both. You have to accept bad graphics but to a real gamer, that shouldn't ever be an issue.

Might and Magic® 7: For Blood and Honor®

Great dungeon crawler with dated graphic

In many reviews for MM7 they say it's a great RPG but that's not true. It does not have role playing in the strictest sense. The story is good but superficial and side quests are paper thin padding. The roll playing is excellent though. The skill system is one of the best, the combat works and the choice between real time and turn based is something that other RPGs really need. This game never hides that its a game, the combat is made for videogames, not tabletops. Your characters develop during the levelling process and every level feels meaningful. There are no dead levels as in other RPGs, especially those based on DnD. The search for trainers drives exploration and random loot drops in hidden chests reward that exploration. The graphics were already bad on release day and they haven't aged well but that's not really an issue imho. I can live with that, I used to game with potatoes when I was young. Install grayface patch for mouse look and the mmrtool for slightly better graphics and you'll have a functional and enjoyable dungeon crawler with excellent combat and level up mechanics.

Mob Rule Classic

Hardcore

This game is hardcore. There's little explanation and the manual doesn't cover essential things. Don't play it like an RTS but rather like an RPG puzzle because you'll have to learn some rather complex mechanics by brute forcing. Not for everyone and there's not many games of this style.
