Soldiers: Heroes of WWII was the first RTS I ever tried, and it got me into the genre. It's a fun, accessible RTS for those wanting to find a title that will ease them into this type of game. While I have never found an RTS with the "perfect" interface, this game's controls and dashboard do a manageable job of keeping things handy. While Company of Heroes might be a better game, Soldiers is a good primer on what the genre has to offer.
