Look past the name and you'll find a surprisingly charming and very well designed game. The easiest way to describe it is "Imagine if Pokemon stayed on the GBA for a gen and they just refined what was possible with the mechanics they had" - go into it as fresh and spoiler-free as possible and discover something odd you never knew you loved.
