I first played this when I was younger and the locations were real in my mind. I still love it. I don't get the criticism about the gameplay. I remembered replaying the gas station mission because I enjoyed the shooting because of some implacable, weird tactility it had. The story is great. It's better than 2, and far better than 3. There's a lot of choice. There's all the spraying up enemy cars in free roam you could want. It's a good time. Play it.
Blood's a great game. My personal favorite Build game out of the Holy Trinity. Do you enjoy great shooting? Nice pixel art? Interesting level design? Funny jokes and references to anything that could be vaguely considered horror within the past dozen centuries? This is the game for you. I would warn you, though, play it with BloodGDX. I was a purist about it for a good while but man, it is a whole lot better with smooth mouse aim, etc. The only thing funky about it is the dodgy way flares work in it, but it's the best source port out there.
You haven't got DOOM yet? You're joking, aren't you. No? Seriously? Little me got hand cramps playing base DOOM with its awful original control scheme. Recently I relented and finally looked into source ports for this, alongside other games I had struggled finishing all that time ago. I also downloaded a little mod called Brutal Doom and there is no better feeling than opening it up after playing it with ye olde graphics for years and seeing the explosive barrels glow, the lighting pop and the... well, you'll have to try it and see for yourself for the best part.
