Into the Breach

Disappointing

Turn-based combat that's most akin to chess, in a simplified form - you need to be thinking about moves ahead, as well as just your next move. The combat in itself is fine, but soon gets repetitive. There's a story and setting, but only at a really basic level of a few screens between missions and the odd snippet elsewhere. What's disappointing as well as oddis that while the team you play are supposedly time-travellers, and even the name of the game is a reference to their travelling back to undertake their mission: time-travel is not really used as a gameplay element. It's the mechanic that allows the player to continue after defeat, and it is presumably how you can see what the enemy's next move will be, but that's about it. I found the best bit of the game to be the excellent soundtrack by Ben Prunty.
