I bought it because it looked like Loco Roco. It's nothing like it :D If you've played and enjoyed Wuppo for its character interactions: this is a game for you. In case you have not: - conversations are positively childish - platforming is fun and has optional difficult segments - puzzles are great - story is funny - many extras and secrets Overall: fun and short romp. I've got like 90% completion after 6 hours or so, next I'll try the local coop.
I bought this for 2€ at a sale and I did not get the satisfaction I anticipated. Even for this low price the game has bugs which make continuing difficult or even impossible. I have only played for one hour, and those are the bugs I encountered: 1. save game will not load, only will present me with a black screen. 2. world map will not display, I was able to fix this twice by restarting the game, the third time presented me with the former bug. 3. Captain/Crew will not follow orders, stop just short from where the landscape was clicked. 4. Can't order Captain around after completing a bounty, was not able to click anywhere. I did watch a Let's Play from someone that did enjoy the game for a few hours. I wish I could replicate the experience because it looked quite fun. I will return the game and might buy it when it is finished. If it is ever. :'(
nazosan wrote a lengthy review of what bugs me the most, but there is more: The game freezes for a second when it is changing the music, very irritating when on slopes. The loading times don't feel appropriate to me, I do have it installed on a Samsung 830 SSD and the game takes it's sweet time to just load the menu. Also there are random stutters all over the world which is very annoying, too. The physics engine is very awkward: I jumped onto stairs, slid on them uphill and was propelled over a few houses and died. Had to do the trip and the mapping all over again. I wish there were at least some kind of additional opportunities to save, so you don't lose another 30min to a stupid death. More than one save slot that you could save to and freely choose from, that would be cool, too. The creature sometimes hands around indefinitely because the way finding just does not a good enough job. The only way to get rid of it is running for it, which in four out of five times does not work. Sometimes I found myself in plain sight of the creature and the only thing it could do was growl at me because it could not find my way to me. Makes the whole thing less scary. Although I do like the way "cartography" works and that you are limited to only drag along one of each specimen at a time. I don't like the fact I coughed up USD 15 for it, ten would feel more appropriate.
This game might look that it could be boring, slow and making you sleepy. It might be that even your first three or four DEFCON phases will feel that way, but as soon as your DEFCON phase hits dark red, this game will get very hectic and every slow move you made during your first few phases will hit you in the face. As soon as you got the hang of DEFCON you will realize that this is a very fast paced real time strategy game that will make you regret your mistakes. This game is not for everyone, but it is a great game IMHO. But in my opinion is a multiplayer key considered DRM. But worth it.
