Project Warlock II

Decent shooter, but...

Just finished the game on "Come Get Some". It was mostly fun, but not without problems. There were some terrain bugs where you can clip through and fall off map or get stuck, and the only way out is to reload. A lot of secrets seem rather poorly placed and are just sitting there in the open. Though, some like the closing door and the toilet hole switch in E1M1 were done very cleverly, and I had to look them up on the internet, but that's about it. The E1M1 had like 9 secrets, and I was expecting the rest of levels to have a similar number, but that wasn't the case. Most levels had just 1 to 3 and above 5 was almost unheard of. One thing I didn't like was how often the game locks you up in tight places with numerous monsters spawning all over, and you're supposed to kill them all before being allowed to leave. At first this wasn't a big deal, but in episode 3 it was starting to get frustrating. I often got locked up in very tight spaces with armies of monsters spawning nearby. The levels of episode 3 seemed a bit rushed as if the game dev was getting tired of his work and vented his frustration into designing these tight ambush spots with multiple boss-level monsters spawning in your face. He was like screw you, player, you're not getting past here! At one point in E3 I only managed to survive by hiding behind some boxes. Unlike the first Warlock game, this one went full 3D. Though some levels were huge, others were a bit small. I liked the multiple upgrade mechanic for weapons (I'll overlook the bugged pistol in E2), but some weapons did feel a but underpowered. The spells were of help as well, but they could use some better descriptions what exactly they're supposed to do. The first time I hit soul bargin in E3, I wasn't sure why my character is refusing to switch away from scythe. Anyhow, for the money you get a very decent shooter game, but it does have some problems, so I'm giving this a 4 out of 5 stars.

Overload

Holy cow!

I was not expecting this quality of the game! At first I was wondering, if the game story was actually happening in the Descent universe because the whole gameplay felt pretty descentish. Then at some point a person in the dialog mentioned PTMC... So yeah, I totally recommend this game. One minor thing that bothered me was that the secret doors can be easily spotted in the map. But overall I'll give it 5 stars.

UnderRail

Very nice

This game... stands out from the rest of its kind. When I first saw this game, I though it was just another boring dungeon crawler with bad graphics, but boy was I wrong. The graphics may not be the prettiest, but the game more than makes up for it with its deep freedom of exploration, mysterious places, combat arsenal and its story line. I mean holy hell, if that wasn't enough then to add to the pile, the game is huge. Although the levels are rather small on their own, there are just so many of them that it never gets boring. There is even character customization to match your play style. Personally I went for the stealthy psionic sniper and I wasn't disappointed. It starts out hard, but once you get to know the enemies and mechanics you can pretty much predict their moves and adapt accordingly. The AI could be improved a bit (i.e. upon throwing a grenade some enemies will just walk from their spot to the point of explosion and back - you could place many mines in their path and repeat the process until they were dead without entering combat at all), but I won't complain about it too much. Overall it was a good experience playing this.

Project Warlock

Decent game

I'll give this a 4 out of 5. It's a decent game, but it has some bugs and issues at the time of launch so I'll be reviewing the current version of 1.0.0.1.1. The game graphics is old-skool classic which brings its own atmosphere to the gameplay. The setting is rather on the grim side with all kinds of monsters and demons running about and it reminds me of games like Blood and Nitemare 3D. The weapon upgrade system is very interesting because you will first get a basic weapon and then you can pick one of the two upgrades for it that fit your play style. There are also various magic spells available for purchase, but I didn't really find much use for them. Sound effects were decent, and the music is superb. Some of the levels are a bit short, but you can't really complain since there are 60 of them. On the negative side I had some issues during gameplay. The lighting looks like it hasn't been done properly on highest quality because many places will appear too dark or simply pitch-black. If you change the graphics quality to medium then there will be no lighting at all and all areas will be fully visible. I've also had some frame rate issues where the game would suddenly skip a few frames into the future. This was especially annoying during combat where you are trying to shoot a monster in front of you and the next moment you realize you're shooting at a wall that has suddenly appeared in front of you (because your character instantly turned for like 90 degrees). One time I even fell into lava and died. There are also some minor non-gameplay-breaking bugs so I'll ignore those because they'll probably be fixed in the next patch. I've played this on medium difficulty and one thing that bothered me is that there were way too many extra lives scattered around. By the time I finished I had like 40 of them.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Collection

Oldie here!

The history of me and this game goes back to 1999 when I bought a Jazz Jackrabbit 2 CD. It was the first game with multiplayer support that I have ever played online and boy do I remember the fun we all had playing it. It was like a new world has just opened before me. Back in the days it was a blast to play online and it came with a nice level editor (JCS) that I fell in love with and made several single and multi player levels. Over the years I remember many people came and went, but it doesn't stop there as the game evolved too. More and more 3-rd party addons were created for by the dedicated community, new game modes were added (ground force, instagib, lrs, trials, etc) , lots of patches were made, a number of websites appeared and disappeared, etc. Today I'm glad to see the game becoming more awesome than ever due to the jj2+ addon which is a must for any player. And of course the game is now finally on GOG. Shouts to: Black Ninja, Link, Neobeo, Grytolle, Dr. Spaz, Nimrod, EvilMike, BlurredD, Firesword, Wakeman, Eagle, Alberto, Monolith, Dizbob, Wisety, Newspaz, Lark, Spazzyman, ElectroPiZZa, Krezack, CelL, Blink, MrMagoo, Stiletto, URJazz, AtomicTaco, Onag, JelZe, Unhit, Cracco, Firesword, Stripe, and others I may have forgotten.

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident

Remarkable

Another hidden jewel, a game with beautiful graphics and relaxing atmospheric music. From the start this game didn't seem to be the type I'd enjoy playing, but soon the story got a lot more interesting and I was beginning to enjoy the combat. You will perform a lot of exploration in this game and venture into the unknown space. There are many strange things you will come across like abandoned space stations, wormholes, a rogue AI ship, alien civilizations and a super advanced type of alien artificial intelligence. You start by controlling a single ship, but later you will be able to use multiple ships in a battle. You will perform various missions like exploration, siege defence, space bug extermination, stealth infiltration, diplomatic missions, alien artifact capture etc. The game allows you to customize your ships with various types of weapons where some may be better for a specific purpose than than others. Overall this game has a lot of features that add up to an enjoyable experience. If you love space exploration, this game is for you.

Total Annihilation: Commander Pack

Best RTS game ever

This game is one of the best things I've ever played! I remember buying it on a CD many years ago, and boy do I still remember the awesome gameplay. I completed both official campaigns and later played the expansion - the core contingency. The gameplay consisted of your classic RTS style battlefield view where you command the units from above. Typically you would start with the commander unit and begin building structures like solar collectors, metal extractors, unit plants and defensive buildings. Later on you gained access to better factories, allowing you to build more advanced units. There were many unit types to choose from - vehicles, robots, ships, aircraft and even hovercraft in the expansion. You could literally choose any playstyle you wanted to defeat your opponent. One thing I missed is that the game didn't have any research tree available. New technologies were automatically available on each new mission. The game also featured multiplayer support, where each player would have access to full tech tree from the start. Add to that, there were later a number of community additions created that made the game even more spicy. If you're serious about playing this game in multiplayer be sure to give the TAUCP (total annihilation unit compilation pack) a try, as it features hundreds of new awesome units.

Terraria

Awesome Adventure

This game is basically a 2D side scroller except that you can destroy and rebuild pretty much any terrain. You start out bare, but you can quickly build some shelter to hide from the enemies that lurk around you. Later on you can adventure underground to mine for all kinds of rare ores to use for crafting. You can craft armor, weapons, magic items, misc items, furniture, building blocks and even boss summoning items. From time to time you will meet with a boss that has decided to attack you or you stumbled into its territory. It might present a challenge to new users, but if you've got good armor and weapons it's no problem. Build your house and later on a village to invite NPC's to come and live alongside, and many NPC's offer some benefits i.e. a store to buy new stuff. Craft awesome weapons and armor and defeat the final boss, if you can :) Finally there's also multiplayer mode available. A very much worth game to buy. One thing that bothers me though is that most enemies are automatically in aggro mode and attack you even before you come close to them.
