Baldur's Gate 3

Sigh, I am an idiot

First lets get some stuff out of the way. Loved Divinity, I put unbelievable amount of hours in it and brought in some fresh converts. And I want to love this too. But I am paying $60 to beta test the game and the first bug is that I can't get past char creation screen. I wish I was joking. So yeah, I am an idiot for buying this stuff early. I genuinely just made the world a little worse for my inability to wait and have Larian actually work out all the bugs. So what's next developers? We pay you for the tools so that we can make our own adventure?

Prey

You won't trust anything.

I don't really play FPS's anymore. There was no reason for me to get Prey and I didn't. My friend gifted it to me on Steam. I was originally hesitant, but he asked me to get through the beginning. I did and I could not stop until I was done after that. It was that good. Your expectations are continously subverted and even ending was not what I thought it would be. Think Bioshock level mindpfq. It is a good ride just because of that. The game can be annoying as some mob projectiles are nearly impossible to dodge. On hard I spent most of my time hiding away. I was able to glitch kill one major mob. And once you find a specific upgrade, mimics won't be as much of a hindrance. Still, 5 stars because despite minor issues and time passed, the memories are still with me. At $10 it is a steal. PS. DLC sucks. Don't get it.

Grim Dawn

Over 300h easy

Very addictive. From my perspective, this is what Diablo 3 was supposed to be. The world is fascinating. The lore is deep, but not shoved in your face and can be easily ignored if you just want to destroy more baddies. Gameplay is up to you. And if you mess up, you can reskill your character to your liking.

Pathologic 2

Not what I hoped it would be

I think it is one of those games that try to be weird for the sake of being weird. And it tries too hard. There is no subtlety here. Weird stuff happens. Is it the plague? Are you hallucinating? Oh wait, you are somewhere else. You died. No wait, you are alive. Eventually, I just stopped trying to figure it out. It is like the old PSX Lucid Dream Simulator, but they did not pretend to have any meaning and/or mystery behind it all. It was just an experience. Still, based on the rating, it clearly appeals to some gamers so I am going to leave it at that.

The Technomancer

It is not bad

The game has some good moments. As in, at one point I was genuinely surprised when the game suggests someone is a spy and when the reveal time comes, you are just surprised and confused at how vast the spook society is in that game. There some bad moments, which lowered my stars. Thankfully, those tend to be annoyances rather than game-breakers ( kinda hard to describe without giving away the plot ). All that said, the story is solid. It is worth a try.

Tower of Time

It is okish

It is an ok RPG. It is has an interesting setting ( could be argued that reverse tower dungeon is a little done, but if it is your first RPG you may see it as a breath of fresh air ). Battle system is nothing special ( I played on hard and it was not challenging ). It is not visually stunning, but for an indie game, I am fine with that. At $10 it is an acceptable purchase. I will admit that I got bored 4 hours in ( between average story and lack of difficulty ), but it is hard to amuse an old fart like me. Hence I did not give it a lower score. I would check it out if the price is right. It might strike your fancy.

RimWorld

I get the appeal but something is mising

I don't know what it is about Rimworld. It seems like it should be hitting all the right notes. The world seems complex and interesting stories can happen. I don't know if it was the controls ( though the tutorial is fine ). I assure you it is not the graphics ( I still occassionally play original ASCII Adom ). I don't know man. I don't know if it is lack of narrator shown in the promo movie. On the surface, I really should be loving this game. And yet, I could not get past 19 minutes. I am not giving it less stars, because I know it will make some people happy. That said, just be prepared that is not for everyone.

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut

This is what Numenera was supposed to be

The game makes me feel like an explorer. It is weird. But it is not weird for weirdness sake. It does not feel fake weird. It just feels like people trying to survive best they can in the world imposed upon them. It feels real ( as in, I actually hesitated really hard over my options in, what i thought was, end of the game ). I will straight up say that I would not have recommended this game to my 16 year old self ( then again, who knows..the writing is good; not Terry Pratchett good, but maybe Douglas Adams? ). The heavy dose of politics, whodunits, weird meta jokes and other teen unfriendly themes is what makes the game attractive to me now. But the story. The story sucks you in. And each time I think I had it figured out, it threw me off with a new piece of conflicting information. The game is now without its flaws. The autosave could be implemented better. There seem to be minor bugs ( re-loaded save may contain results of last event ). Nothing game breaking. Other: At the time I am playing it, achievements don't work, but.. in this game it worked. Maybe there should be an option to just turn them off altogether? The game is by far the nicest game surprise of 2019.

ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie game

Russian Fallout 1 ( or 2)

That really will sum it up. The game will often use similar approach to just most F1, F2 mechanics ( sometimes with slightly altered names ). Humor is similar as well. There is some odd mysticism, survival, and, by law now, crafting ( though I honestly can't complain, because it actually fits a survival game ). The only reason I don't have it on GOG is because Steam had it first. If I knew it was coming, I would have waited. It is worth a try. 5 stars because I am biased.

ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery)

It is a classic for a reason.

The game brings a lot of memories. A lot of screaming as your PC meets untimely end ( usually caused by your stupidity, hubris or just bad luck ). Some deaths are more amusing than others.. Anyway, I have a steam edition ( I played a lot of the free version and I believe the author should be rewarded ). The game can be frustrating and learning curve is demanding, but a win feels like a true win. When you take out shadow wyrm, you feel a sense of accomplishment. The alighment is more than simply creating weak good/bad choice system. The characters will may not talk to you if you are chaotic, but they may present you with an artifact if you happen to be lawful. The classes are interesting ( some unique to ADOM ); Gods listen and will be annoyed if you pester them too much. If you wish for a million wishes.. point is, there are tons of those little things that make this world seem more real than many other games of its time ( and frankly, of today ). Which is pretty impressive given that the game is all about magic, fantastic creatures, quests and saving the world.. I never beat it. I still have a save somewhere of a dwarven priest ready to storm the final level, but I just do not want to risk it. Maybe one day.. Try the free version and see if you like it. There is a reason it is a classic.
