Pros: Concept of the game is really good (establish your kingdom on a cursed land). Writing of the main quest is quite good Lots of good and stable mods(i played with: Bags of tricks, Kingdom resolution, Cleaner, Better vendors, Skipintro, Custom map markers) No bugs Cons: Loading time are very bad (advice, don't allow auto save, way too long and way too frequent and use the cleaner mod before leaving every maps) Writing of side quests and companions quests are bad, manichean and without subtility. The game is tooooo long. Lots of other cons but i was able to wipe them off with moderate use of the mods (like buff too short, slow movement pace, save scumming sometimes necessary constant pressure of time etc etc) Warning: the game is very timeline dependant. 2 massively big red flags: 1: If you are not familiar with the pathfinder system, you are not welcome. Nothing is expalined, no charts, no rules, no guides nothing. Shame, shame, shame on you creators of this game. Stay between you and your private club, i didn't feel welcome, i will never come back. 2: The mass companion slaughter toward the end of the game. Each of your compagnon have their life tied to their quest line. And if you are just a little selfish or bored with their diva attitude, death just before the final chapter. Death of companions in a game is a serious matter, something you've work hard on(aeris in ff7, roland in bd2, Mordin solus in me2). I lost 2 out my 5 companions, one was inevitable, the other had to die and disappear one complete chapter before coming back, way too much time. Making me thing, oh did they killed my main healer???? i have to hire a mercenary and 40 hours later, oh no my main healer is back now WTF??????? One last thing, if you play with the cleaner mod, beware to check the dead option before destroying monster as you could wipe story progressing mobs not killed yet.
cons: -grey enemy on grey walls -few enemy types (dogs, firing one and heavy firing one) and few weapons -VERY controlling: 1: ammo and weapon are reseted each chapter and they only give you want THEY want, (do your handpistol perks in the beginning because later it's gonna be hard, thanks lack of ammo of THAT type) 2: in the end, it's a very very long corridor with several arenas -a bad boss: london machine of destruction, lots of waiting, i didn't liked it - the ending is kinda very very bad, lame and definitly on the lazy side -i can't count the number of time you are "surprised in cut scene" by evil/robot guy, why do they not kill the heroes when they have the opportunity..... are the vilains that stupid???? -level design sometimes quite good but sometimes also quite bad pros: -gameplay is ok, movement is good and responsive (also very repetitive) -story is ok despite the "surprise" moments and the fact that they try REALLY hard to put you under constant pressure conclusion: a 2.5/5 stars for me (3 stars for an average game, minus 0.5 for the boring boss and bad ending) for me it's a proof that cinema and video games are 2 differents types of arts and should be treated differently but if you liked bioshocked infinte you should also enjoy this game (less box to open also so yeaah ;) )
In chapter 4 you have a mandatory mini game which consist of shooting asteroids with a barelly controllable canon. Clumsy, hard, frustrating and very bad control, right in the middle of the game. I get the game for low price (reduction and old game) but i pitty those who had to pay max price in 2008. Very bad game design because this bad mini game is MANDATORY. I tried 4 5 times then pass, why would i want to suffer this bad choice of game design? Game devellopper, if you want to put mini game to add diversity to your game: a: make it easy or b: make it optional (and all in all , try to make it good also). Maybe it's your thing or maybe it's not, do a google search like dead space asteroid before making your decision (wish i had knew this before buying)
I kinda hated the beginning "bluff". It put me in such a bad mood that i then saw every aspect of the game as tedious bad and boring. I might not be fair to the game after that point. But so much disrespect to the player put me off, instantly. There are definitly better ways to make a player "feel" fear than to threaten him to loose all its progression definitly. In the end my reaction was, i don't want to learn anything from those .... erf you got the point.
This game shoudn't have been sold by his own. It should have been included with Demon's winter. Why? It's just a demo of Demon's winter: less class (only 2), less race, less monsters, less colors and the land to explore is extra small. The basics of Demon's winter are here but at an embryonic stade. Play Demon's winter instead unless you want an oversimplified and quick version.
Without mod the definition is too low. I choose reborn to lower the grind. Story is bad, controls are not smooth. World is huge (too much imo) and enemies were quite repetitive. The world map is one of the best i ever found. Character development is ok, enough freedom and not over complicated. 2 problems: no explanation anywhere and increasing the power of a power also increase it's cooldown. So it can be very tedious to change gamestyle if your power is too high (you're stuck with using lots af specific cooldown reducing gear). Bronze is extra extra easy. Silver is a littel bit difficult and i think gold is where the fun start. I played bronze while exploring a lot and doing all the side quests i was able to find. Big mistake, as a seraphin, i was able to clean everything with one spell, an aura, area of effect damage: best gameplay ever. Rushed silver in 4 5 hours but couldn't find the will to continue with gold. I didn't try underworld (the expension) also. Conclusion: clunky but ok-ish gameplay quite repetitive big world to explore beware of overleveling (bronze 1 to 46, silver 47 to 90 gold start at 95 96) not the diablo like i would start with, but if it's your thing and it's the last you haven't done, sure, go.
Character creation and combats are top, lots of classes and races with similar to gold box combat, but it's not add, it's completly new with specific monsters, spells, invocations etc etc. I found it very interesting and very refreshing. Exploration of the world: you are definitly free, you'll roam land and water (and in my memory water fights weren't bad). First time i played i litteraly skipped the firsts dungeons and found, after lots of roaming a later (in the normal order) dungeon, and still was able to finish the game. The world is big, some nice encounters and great descriptions and cherry on top of the icing of the cake, you can craft (or pay someone to do it) the weapons of your choice, why was it possible in a 1980's era game and not found anywhere now???why??? This feature was so good, you find an antic and lost dwarf artisan city and they are able to craft the best weapons if you can afford. Conclusion: it's a very good game despite outdated graphics (if the pics presented in the description doesn't pull you off, go for it ;) )
Way too long, uninteresting crafting, vendor loot (mixing finite number of chest and random weapons: not a good idea, either fixed weapons or insane number of loot, like borderlands or path of exile), story not that good, unbalanced (as soon as you reach level 3 skill, especially the bow). I just enjoyed the first chapter (the fight with the boss and three mid boss resurected was really interesting). After that, i just wihsed the game would end as fast as possible. (i also liked the orc/barbarian invaded village and the fact i was able to nearly kill both sides (just one of the barbarian managed to escape, RIP poor tavern keeper)).
