As a long time fan of Homeworld, and a fan of Ground Control, I am in love. It's the feel and art of Homeworld, with a great story and impecable art direction, but in the sand. But it adds a level of strategy that far surpasses the original Ground Control with a very fun elevation and physics system, which makes attack vectors, proper use of smoke screens, air strikes and proper postioning the meat of this game. - Of SPECIAL mention is the physics system in the simulation of the vehicle movements. A small vehicle is not just a x,y,z coordinate wiht stats on a symple 3d map. The dust, rock, sand, the speed as well as the elevation all come into play, and the projectle systems are simulated. If there is ever another Dune game, this is what it should be like.
This game, more than anything else, has kept my passion for the SOTS-verse alive, and I wholehearthedly say, is one of the best tactical turn-based dungeon crawlers out there. A wonderful artstyle, a lovingly crafted game which has lore that ties into SOTS (grab that one if you like 4x games) perfectly and a deep and challenging gameplay, it's well worth it's price and renown. Although one run won't allow you to finish the game, the way you can help your characters out between runs is unique and forces you to do some meta-strategy out of this world. A must have!
You roleplay, you don't just play. While comfortably tucked in the 4x genre, this game is very different. Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate is a play-style rather then the general theme. You can also Explore, Unite, Ascend. You could simply Exist, Survive, Perish. The possibilities are varied, because the game's forté is the roleplaying aspect. On the minus side, there are almost no tactics, just strategy - where you put your fleets and why matters a lot, but the battles amount to who has the bigger, better and more guns wins. You've heard the rest all before, so just go for it.
It's not a game, it's a scam, or at best a portfolio piece for the artists involved. You see how awesome the art looks like? Well everything else is terrible, especially the game design and voice acting. Not to mention the bugs. I could write more, but what would be the point? They owe me a buck.
The true riches lie bellow, in the Caves of Qud. A unique roguelike with a devoted development team, a bright future and a good community. The character building system is enormous and almost limitless, I love playing an albino birdman with a laser rifle shooting from above, or an amphibian mutant desert dweller wearing a stillsuit. On top of that the art-style is gorgeous and the music is perfect. It's worth the price and runs on surprisingly slow PCs despite the complexity, go for it. Live and drink, friend. + I can't really add too much to the best reviews, this game is almost a perfect story-driven adventure RPG, with a ton of lore, not to mention the great writting and great voice-acting. Play at least the Witcher 2 before and keep the saves, they feed into this one! - That being said, you can only play Geralt, who is a close combat sword-master with some basic spells and tons of alchemy (potions and poisons). Although many games give you much more variety in game styles, this game takes this game style to perfection. So don't expect to play a ranger, or sneak around too much. - I wish they would update the in-game Gwent to the actual contemporary game, that is very confusing. * Tips for a better experience - Turn off the map markers for random encounters (get suprised!) and the path indicator (dots), this adds to immersion! So get it, Play it and Enjoy!
