Outlast

Horror that is actually scary!

I've played all different horror games. Matter of fact, I would consider myself a veteran of horror. To the point where I have become completely desensitized by the monotonous jump scares that tend to riddle most games these days. No more, are there atmospherically pleasing moments, or tension building up without any major pay off. It's all just, round the corner, *BOO!*, next corner, *BOO!*. Yes I'm looking at you Dead Space and F.E.A.R(I mean seriously, warn the players before there is a scary bit?) Outlast is perfect in every aspect. You feel so helpless, in a condensed insane Asylum. You look wide-eyed into a dark corridor as you plead to the game to not make you have to go down there. But not EVERYTHING in this game is out to get you, even though it feels like it is. That's what makes it great. You are unsure and vulnerable at the best of times. Just waiting for the next thing to happen. The developers did a great job at tricking the player at times. corridor) The controls are great, you can move fluidly around the environment, and the graphics are incredible! But the atmosphere, oh the atmosphere, I just want to get out of this place, but my curiosity drags me down to the depths of hell even further. All in all, a great game from an indie developer, making excellent use of the Unreal Engine.

Rise of the Triad (2013)

A true FPS that brings you back

Retro FPS Fans will find themselves back in their old shooter shoes with the games run and gun style of action gameplay. If you're looking for story, and realism you won't find it here. If you're looking for a dark, gritty, brutal and just outright BLOODY experience, you've come to the right place. Whether you were a fan of the original game, or you are just sick and tired of the hand-holding, story telling shooters of today, you will feel right at home. The game can appear glitchy at times, with a strange lunge knifing system that you will often miss with and the hit boxes can be a little funny as well. I have seen some clipping with enemies poking through walls, but that is rare. This isn't a type of game to stop and smell the roses. This is a blood pumping, WASD-SPACEing, trigger itching gorefest. However, players that DO stop and look at the high texture detailed models, will often get a chuckle at times. I shall not post any spoilers here though, as I do not believe in ruining humor before it is experienced. All in all, this is a great game. With many references to the old game. There are times where you feel it is a bit TOO much like the old game, but I do like that they even added a "Classic" mode within the sounds, to bring back the old soundtrack, rather than the metal (albiet GREAT) remakes. To put it simply, an old game with a new face. Enjoy!
