SteamWorld Heist

Turn based tactics with funny robots

SteamWorld Heist is a turn-based tactics game with some puzzle elements, mostly involving trick shots or move order. RPG elements are there, but there's not a lot. Characters have things to say and level up, but they don't get mad at another robot on your team when I miss the mark and blow them up. Oops. The core of the game is boarding enemy ships and space stations with a small party of raiders, talking 1 to 4 robots. You recruit your crew, so you can't create one from scratch and pick all the ideal traits. They have personalities, basic loveable rogue stuff. Character interactions are mostly skippable, which I like. Character types are also basic, sniper, heavy weapons, assault, and melee, with some hybrid elements. Billy is the sole melee specialist but can equip handguns. Each character has four equipment slots, weapon, hat, and two utility items like grenades or first aid kits. Hats do nothing except get shot off heads and are there for fun and collecting. Enemies are mostly assault type robots, with some melee, heavies, snipers and bosses. Scattered about are bags of swag, which will most likely be currency (water) but could be weapons or utility. Nearly every mission will have the big box o' swag and missing it will mean you don't get full rewards, meaning less XP for the team. If your team is destroyed, the mission ends in failure and you lose currency, possibly a lot. I'm out of space, but I like this game and I'll watch out for the sequel.
