Outlaws + A Handful of Missions (Classic, 1997)

The real wild west game

I will begin this opinion piece by saying that I haven't even heard about this game back in the 90's. I played all other shooters but the bootleggers didn't sell this one ;) So there I was, looking for a good old game on GOG and I found this gem, bought it on sale and left it because I thought it was just an average mid 90's shooter. Oh boy was I wrong! I played the game on bad difficulty aka medium, and it was very hard. But once you get used to floaty movement and reloading your guns this game becomes a real joy to play. This game was made by LucasArts studio so there is a story told through cartoonish cutscenes. It is a generic story but it is a westernlike game so that is ok. The game begins with number 1138 referencing George Lucas first movie THX 1138. You can also find other references like the chicken sound when you put your mouse over quit button etc. OST is great and adds to the overall atosphere, you can clearly hear that the author was influenced by the maestro Ennio Morricone. Back to the title of this review, this is without a doubt the best wild west game ever made, slim pickings I know, but Red Dead and Call Of Juarez don't really feel like you are really a badasss cowboy on a revenge quest. Everything in this game was made so that you the player gets a real western shooting simulator. Great game in general. Outside the main story you have 9 historical missions, not all of them are good but some really interesting concepts in there. So is the game perfect ? Of course not. There are some open area maps that are a bit boring and few guns and dynamite that are almost useless. Now why did Nightdive remaster Rise Of The Triad, Turok 2 and 3 and some other games before this objectively better game is beyond me. I am saying this because this game is crashing often and does't have any features that would make it a much better experience. Always a shame to see great games like this not being optimized for modern systems. Buy it ! :)

POSTAL 2

It is a critique of modern consumerism

POSTAL 2 is a very good game that tackles some important topics in a unique way. You can play it without thinking about the big picture and kill everything in your way if that is what you like but if you take your time and observe some things you will see similarities with the movie Falling Down. Runs well but it crashes in some crazy fights where there are lot of missiles and fires so quicksave often.

POSTAL 2: Paradise Lost

Not as good as the original

Postal 2 is a very good game if you like that type oh humor and over the top volence. Paradise Lost is more of the same but with boring quests. That would mean that Postal 2 is a one trick pony....maybe but this DLC feels like a lesser version. They added some new weapons and locations but the whole thing feels boring and the humor feel forced with very long conversations that really feel stupid and not in a good way It is on sale for 1 buck so you can try it out but it is not that good.

Stranglehold

Max Payne on steroids !

It is a great shoote, if you ignore that awful QTE where you have to dodhe bullets and some slight camera issues. Now the title of this review is missleading because this game is not Max Payne in terms of story, this is an over the top action movie story so no deep thoughts here just fun action. Really good game, runs well on Windows 10 and it is without doubt a quality game with fun and precise shooting and solid story. If you want to know what it is like to star in an action movie than you ned to play this game.

The Suffering

Few great sections dont make a game good

First of all set your affinity to 1 core if you don't want to get constant freezes. This review will also touch on the second game TTB. The Suffering is just ok, not very good, not great just ok. It is a horror shooter that doesn't deliver on either of these 2. Shooting is done through 1st or 3rd person perspective and it is not satisfying at all. That being said at least it registers your shots unlike the second game but more on that later. The horror element is done verty well in some sections, prison section and Dr Killjoy's sanatorium. The good doctor is the star of this game and the other characters get nowhere near him. The level design is ok in closed areas and poor in opened areas. The audio is all over the place, people talking over each other, audio get very buggy in some sections. There are also some visual glitches. The Suffering is not a bad game but when compared to some other shooters from this era in doesn't hold up well. The 2nd game Ties That Bind has better controls, better shooting and looks better. But (there is always one) when you shoot an enemy it is not rare that the game doesn0t register your shots. Audio is buggy like in first game. The biggest problem this game has is that it lacks identity. Long story short, TTB is some kind of a shooter with scripted sections, you can't stock medkits, you can get killed easily even on medium difficulty and it is not because of your skill, just cheap deaths. Less horror in this one and the story and characters are weaker also. I would recommend the first game because of some very well made and atmospheric sections, just don't expect fireworks. You can skip the second game.

Clive Barker's Undying

Great game but it has some flaws

I heard of this game when I was a kid, never played it. Well now I finished it and I am surprised mostly in a good way. This game has great level design, great atmosphere and great sound design. It is not a shootert, more like System Shock/Bioshock and that is fine because this is primary a horror shooter. I would've given it a higher rating but there are some things that partly ruined the whole experience. Most of the boss fights are awful and the human AI is a joke. I will not nitpick and list other minor flaws. All in all a great atmospheric game that is well worth playing.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain

Ahead of its time

I remeber playing a demo of this game when I was 12 yrs old. I finished the game 25 yrs after playing the demo :) I finished all the other games in this universe and I can say that this game is in terms of story and depth of gameplay the best in the series and you have to know it is the only one made in 2D. I can see some flaws of course but you should try and rate this game as a piece of gaming history in my opinion. Great game and it is a must buy.
