GreedFall - De Vespe Conspiracy

Enjoyable but not must have

This DLC is enjoyable but doesn't add much in terms of story. Worth buying at a discount.

GreedFall

Story driven RPGs that rewards diplomacy

Greedfall is a good RPG for you if you are in for the story, the characters and the political intrigue. From beginning to the end every quest delivers interesting develoments. You play to win allies not only battles. If you like to play RPGs which are more about being smart and subtle rather than hitting everything that moves you won't be disappointed. The acting, the setting and the music all contribute to create an immersive atmosphere. At the end of the game I grew attached to some of the characters and felt the weight of some difficult decisions (no spoilers!). All the factions and companions have compelling narratives and motives that keep you interested and make you want to follow through, The gameplay is just ok and the battles tend to be a bit boring compared to other action RPGs, but this is also probably something the developers didn't want to invest more. The interactions with objects are also pretty simple. Crafting is ok if you just want to upgrade some objects and brew potions, but it doesn't allow you to create armors or weapons from scratch. For me honestly this simplicity made sense because all these details that are better executed in other RPGs tend to distract more from the story and make you lose immersion, some people might find this annoying. It's not exactly an open world, but the maps are big enough that it gives you that feeling. Think of Dragon Age Inquisition with the right amount of density of stuff you can find in any given area.

Nobody Wants to Die

Good premise, short game

The game starts from an interesting premise: nobody dies anymore because their consciousness is transferred to a new body. It starts slowly by explorings how people would see life, while you conduct your investigations. The game is very short and I feel it could have gone much further. But it is dense and interesting. I particularly liked the investigations. You can use different tools and reconstruct what happened. Though when you do, you can't really be wrong because the technology tells you always the right answer. What you can be wrong about are your "gut feelings". Maybe this is intentional, since the protagonist doesn't have his original guts anymore...

Baldur's Gate 3

Good enough to be fun

BG3 is good as far as RPG go. You have - numerous options for customization - the battles have a tactical dimesion to it - interesting side quests - aestetically pleasing, good voice acting But as a personal opinion - the story is just ok. Sometimes the side quests are more interesting than the main story line - it feels that having so many choices is kind of performative. I don't know if it was the intent of the writers to paralize overthinkers with so many possible choices for every little thing, but if yes, mission accomplished :) - some companions are very unlikable. - although you have the illusion of choice it feels that the story is tailored around good/neutral aligned characters. Playing as evil (not Dark Urge, but more subtle) is not rewarding at all. Since that put so much effort in making the player choose every ridiculous thing, you would think that they would make nuanced playthrough feel more natural... In general evil characters are kind of cartoonish in a way or at the very least cliché. - the music and the artwork feel very generic. Not bad, on the contrary technically polished.. but kind of forgeattable. I didn't have "wow" moments. It feels it lacks a certain character, despite the execution being flawless.

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut

Disco Elysium is an experience

Disco Elysium is hands down the best game I have ever played. - Gameplay: it has a unique approach to RPG. At the beginning you choose the abilities you want to focus on, like any other RPG. The higher the score the higher the probability of success. But here is the twist. Success and failure are not clear cut. You can succeed at something and wish you didn't or you can fail and it can be wild and owning up to your failure as a badge of honor. - The protagonist: since the beginning you have a rich internal landscape which is shaped by the kind of character you have chosen to be. Those characteristics are voices inside of your head that make for very interesting (and often hilarious) internal monologues. DE is a game that rewards the player going off the script, trowing the script completely out of the window. IT. IS. FUN. - The story: it is never banal. You are a mess while the world around you seems to collapse. There are politics, history, social and philosophical themes, mystery and the soprannatural/mystical - The setting: the city of Revachol is so beautifully depicted. It is raw and poor, and reminds of a post sovietic city. There are opposing factions, each one with their own agenda and view of the world. The contrast between the messy and broken protagonist and the people of Revachol is striking: where everything is exaggerated in you, the people around you defy clichèes. The writing does a conscious efforr of hooking you up with the usual tropes, only to deconstruct them and revealing deeply human and complex characters that don't fit neatly into a box. - The art: the whole game is beautifully handdrawn. The music and sound accompany the player and convey emotions. The final cut also has voice acting which adds to the depth of the game. All in all. I loved every minute of this game!
