Severance: Blade of Darkness

A classic diamond in the rough

This is a great classic and I'm very happy it's come to GoG. That being said, I think there's some valid knocks that can be made against it, and I'd like people to have the right idea about what they're buying. The Pros first: this game has a brilliant dark fantasy atmosphere that is still unique in games to my knowledge. The real time lighting system was revolutionary at the time and is used to good effect. Gameplay is very well polished ; difficulty is a little on the more challenging side. Fortunately you can save anywhere, so it's almost never egregious. The unfortunate cons: story is pretty much nonexistent. Some monotony does creep into the gameplay over time as well: enemy and level design is good, but there's only so many different kinds to see. As mentioned before, the difficulty is somewhat high, but surmountable but for a special case worth mentioning. The main quest involves collecting "power runes" or something from the various levels, and all are required to progress to the final mission. If you miss any, you can still complete the level, but will have to travel back at the end of the game and run the mission over to get them. The levels are flushed of useful items and filled with dangerous enemies, making them an annoying slog to complete. I stopped playing on one of these re-do levels, as I heard the last mission wasn't all that good anyways. Hope this helps some, thanks for reading!
