Genuinely still holds up (with some QoL adjustment, such as pressing alt+number to select a squad) with great sounds and amazing music yet to be surpassed. Skirmish it is lacking as the AI isn't great but for campaign the AI works well for each scenario. The unit variety is good and the core concept of commander / regicide play is always good, encouraging ambushes and blitzkrieg attacks into enemy bases without a slow grind to wear down their whole expansive base (assuming you can spot their Commander, so intel becomes vital). Definitely worth a go still, and oodles of mods and maps if you feel like tinkering.
Fun, relaxed, engaging First let me say: This is a snappy, punchy, fast-paced yet turn-based rogue-lite. If you want pages and pages of text, or hand-holding quests of dullness this might not be for you. I'm not a big 'time-waster' fan. I like games I can jump into and play. I also don't usually like deck building games, but this game pulls it off. Weapons and tools have cards, and combat is based around opportunity to use the weapons and tools you've equipped your derelict scavenging, dystopian sci-fi mob. The atmosphere is great, the artwork phenomenal. This is what drives the game's environment, as opposed to reams of text. The story is light, and dialogue is snappy and fun, without dragging on. I no longer have the time or inclination to read through the life story of every beggar of riverwood, or really care too much about finding the sacred dagger of indigar, so this game was a refreshing take for me. It rests on having solid, engaging mechanics, with the card-drawing system adding a touch of adaptability, to prevent the usual formulaic approaches in turn-based games. You can nudge the deck in your favour, set-up skills and tools to favour your play style, but there is that outside chance you'll find yourself having to be resourceful and adapt to unexpected opportunities and outcomes. One thing to mention from other reviews: Energy is a resource for exploring, but you can stock up on So yes, this game, unlike many others, can be unforgiving if you neglect certain aspects. And thank the devs for that! Most games I play I end up with bundles of superfluous power-ups/potions/spells - in this you can focus on expanding energy reserves anyway to offset the risk, but be sure to make sure you save enough to make your way back to the spaceship. It helps actually add to the vibe of being a deep-sea diver, but, in space (hence Deep Sky Derelicts, I guess?) Overall this is a fantastic game and helps bridge the gap, stopping turn-based meaning time-wasting
This game is good, worth playing if you like the genre - it's faster paced that E:TW & Napoleon. I would say you want to get the mods such as Battle Mod, as well as one that adds artillery officers & men. Smoke mod makes it look a bit cooler too. Definitely worth a look, addictive as hell, even coming home drunk I have loaded this up to have an ill-fated blast!
