Grim Dawn

One left, none to go

Crate Entertainment is the only game developer seemingly left that understands that online gaming only is probably the biggest mistake the game industry ever made. They also understand that what made games great was that they put just enough (but no more) effort into it that it could then be modified by the gamer as they saw fit because it was worth making an effort to change it. Crate Entertainment are not a great developer- they're just middle of the road. That's not to say they haven't made a great game. When you look at the work they put into the start of the game to when you get to the Warden, you can see an absolute intent to make the best they could out of a severely low budget. The classes are bare-minimum. The actions they can do are bare-minimum. The whole game feels bare-minimum. That is its success. The internet and online only is killing the game industry. Killing its players. Killing its game designers; Exhausting it to the very fabric. This the first time in a decade that I've noticed that a company doesn't have any shadow hanging over it. It means more to me that anything else; There's no bad vibe coming from them that I can see or from anyone on the forums. There's also an Asset Manager so that you can create a mod from existing assets and literally create your own game. After several weeks of learning everything you can you get to appreciate what CE's developers were doing. They made the most fun game without being totally over-controlling about it and avoiding everything that's currently going on with these types of loot-intentional designs. When you end up liking the people who created a game, you'll feel something for it even if it's not quite where you hoped it would be. As a footnote, I'd sure like the DLCs to be a lot less to buy on top of the game.
