The Long Journey Home

Great gamplay concept, poor chances

This game executes the idea of orbital space flight thorugh solar systems brilliantly, as well as the lander missions to planets, gas giants and moons. Crew options are interesting and amusing at times. The ship and lander options okay, but could use some tweaking. Overall there is a good balance to managing the ship, crew, orbital flights and travel, as well as lander missions, it is all just enough to feel like a simulation of space exploration. The game lets you go to dangerous planets as well as safe ones, which can be exciting and challenging, where as other space games, especially simulation ones, just don't let you go to dangerous planets or places. The game and the players chances of success however is too random, preventing much progress beyond the first couple of galexies towards home, even on the easiest difficulty. The gameplay loop feels too tedious for the small amount of progress rewarded for the efforts, it would feel better if at least a decent distance was achieved towards home before everyone dies and you start again. It perhaps needed a bit more tweaking prior to release. If you are after a challenging experience, as opposed to a relaxed one, then perhaps the settings are correct for that. However I like a good challeng myself so my game experience last longer, and I still argue that it feels your chances of success are still left to much to luck for even a challening experience to be 'successful'. Equipment modules are randomly damaged, and it is impossible to repair them yourself, even with an 'engineer' crew member, forcing you to rely on space stations to repair this for you... that is, if you have the credits. It would have been good if some sort of maintenance on modules was possible, either through crafting or use of resouces.

Drova - Forsaken Kin

Maybe the best 2D RGP of 2024

Great 2D RPG, well thought out, quite tough so can enjoy a longer, more challenging adventure. Story so far is good. A lot of flexibility in combat focus, like you'd expect from an RPG, you can choose to fucus on a variety of weapon types.

Star Wars™: Jedi Knight™ II - Jedi Outcast™

Great Classic

One of the best jedi simulator games ever made. This classic allows you to play both a first person shooter and sword combat dueller in one game, all set in the star wars universe. If your a fan of the star wars games then I can happly recommend this. Only minor downside of this game is part of the plot which breaks with cannon surrounding how the force works (the 'force' isn't something that a person can just remove or take a 'dose' of to get it back). Academy is the next in the series and is just as good, os if you've played that then it is worth playing this one as well.

Block'hood

Fun, challenging and unique

The game is a city builder type game that has you creating neighbourhoods instead of entire cities which I think is great as it allows you to better see and measure the success of the environments you create, both natural and built, at a more human scale. Instead of generic parks or building types, here you can create unique buildings as well as hybrid structures. It has a great artistic style and clear dynamic overlays which reveal inefficiencies in the neighbourhood. One of the games unique features is the ability to form connections that create ‘synergies’ between blocks, which boosts the neighbourhood’s performance over less squares. Also unique is its ability to create environments not just for people but animals as well, each animal requiring specific natural tile types to attract them and make them happy just as the humans require specific built tile types to attract them and make them happy. All round it is a fun game that has a lot of flexibility due to the variety and range of tile types and environments that can be created and explored.
