I've been returning to a genre I loved from childhood as of late, the humble point-and-click games. I briefly dipped my toe back in to the pool in 2009-ish, playing the Blackwell games, Darkfall, Momento Mori (nobody seems to talk about that one nowadays), and the Dracula series. Of those games, I thought the Blackwell ones had a certain naive charm that stuck with me. Skip to a few weeks ago and I've started going down the Point-and-click rabbit hole once again. I've been reading alot of threads about Wadjet Eye Games - the makers of Blackwell - and I was familiar with Gemini Rue and Shardlight, but, holy cow, have they come on leaps and bounds since the Blackwell days! I've bought nearly all of their catalogue. I was waiting for this one to come on offer, as it had a distinct charm about it that stood out as a little odd and off kilter. I will not spoil any of the story, but I want to touch on a few points. The game is a masterpiece. Beautiful voice-acting that could have been lifted straight out of a high budget TV show, very beautiful, strange, well animated pixel-art, but above all the story. It is truly unique and intriguing. The whole atmosphere of this game conjures an infectious portal into the strange world of English mythology. Barrows are mysterious things, almost like crypts or pyramids full of secret treasure, and this game covers this topic in a very organic way. The characters are deep and humanly flawed and there are some very interesting scenes going back to the protagonist's childhood. This game is breathtaking. A true piece of art that I would recommend to anyone, whether they enjoy the genre or not. 10/10!
