This game looks great, but the looks, for me, don't match up to my expectations in a shooter. In the end, it's more looks than bones. I don't like open world games and vast stretches of terrain, and I felt like most of the game was spent walking/running to the next place for a quick shootout before hitting the high road again for another marathon. I actually cheated and gave myself infinite sprint, because it was so tedious to walk everywhere, and that honestly helped a lot. The game became much more enjoyable when I could finally move to the next place in a timely manner. I don't care about story in a game; I value gameplay over the story, and I felt like the gameplay was lacking just enough to dock a star. I think this is a solid 4-star game. It's above average, but not excellent. The gun play is fun--fun enough that I wanted more, but that was also the problem: I didn't get more, it just barely scratched the surface. This is what makes me prefer Crysis Warhead over this game, as it has more gun fights (or at least filler space in between, which is maybe my main gripe). It frequently goes on sale and I think it's worth buying at the discounted price. I enjoyed it enough that I would recommend it, but not enough that it earns any awards in my books.
I might be unpopular in saying so, but I liked Crysis Warhead better than the first Crysis. I don't like open world games and vast stretches of terrain, and I felt like most of the original game was spent walking/running to the next place for a quick shootout before hitting the high road again for another marathon. I actually cheated and gave myself infinite sprint, because it was so tedious to walk everywhere, and that honestly helped a lot. Granted, there's still a lot of walking in Crysis Warhead, but Warhead adds what was missing in the first game: more gun fights. I don't care about story in a game; I value gameplay over the story, and I felt like Warhead was less story and more gameplay than the first game. The gameplay in Crysis is fun and I thought this was a good shooter, but it loses 1 star for just not being as compelling of a shooter as I like. It frequently goes on sale and I think it's worth buying at the discounted price. I enjoyed it enough that I would recommend it, but not enough that it earns any awards in my books.
This is one of my favorite games. I played it for the first time a few years ago and thought it was OK, but after playing it again recently it has earned its place on my top games list. I'm pretty picky about my games. I value gameplay over story any day and don't like things getting in the way of my shooting (cutscenes, RPG/upgrade menus, etc). There are a couple cutscenes in this game, but they felt mild and tolerable. So I'll give them a pass. I could sit down and expect to PLAY the game. And I enjoyed every minute of it. The guns are satisfying. I think FEAR has the best pistol in FPS history, and that shotgun just might have the same honor. The melee and slow-mo are fabulous. FEAR has excellent gameplay mechanics and it makes the gun fights fun. The level design is pretty linear, and the environments not too varied, but the design is top-notch for combat and story-telling, and that's what's important. Every combat area is a well thought out and planned arena to pit you against some of the best AI you'll face. The way they tell the story through optional environment interaction is my favorite way to do story-telling in an FPS: it's there if you want it, and you can skip it if you don't want it. The horror is done right, too. This game has stunning ambiance. It has some of the best lighting I've seen in a game. It's scary and frightening, but it never forgets what it is: an FPS. Enough raving. FEAR is an excellent game and I think you should play it. I did have to apply a couple fixes to get it working properly for me, and I could nitpick a couple aspects of the game here and there (e.g., I wish movement speed were faster overall), but other than that I have nothing to complain about. You should play this game! PS: I thought the expansions were great and I recommend them. I also really liked FEAR 2 and 3 and recommend those--just beware they are not like FEAR (1), but they are great shooters nonetheless.
I found this game a couple years ago, bought it and played it, and quite enjoyed it. Having been sick a couple weeks ago, I installed it again and was quite surprised by how much fun I had. This is a solid FPS! I'm pretty picky about my games. I value gameplay over story any day and don't like things getting in the way of my shooting (cutscenes, RPG/upgrade menus, etc). There are cutscenes and weapon upgrade menus in this game, but they felt mild and tolerable. So I'll give them a pass. Generally, I could sit down and expect to PLAY the game. And I enjoyed every minute of it. The gun-play is fun. I like the weapons, they have a good punch to them and are fun to use. I wish we could carry more than 2 (I don't understand that trend in FPS games). Movement speed is pretty average, it's not Doom or Quake, but you can get around pretty quickly. The TMD mechanics are fun and fit into the game. I like that you get medkits instead of regenerative health. The puzzles are just the right balance for me between insultingly easy and distracting. It's a short campaign. But honestly, I like this length in a game. It probably took me around 5-6 hours to complete. I play pretty slow, so your average might be quicker than that. At 5-6 hours I'm not burned out and was left with just enough accomplishment to feel satisfied and just enough wanting to still crave the game. That's a good place to be. The options menu is a bit bare. You'll have to find the FOV fix online (I used Flawless Widescreen), but it's easy to set up and get going and works with multiple other titles too. All in all, I don't have any major gripes with this game. I really liked it. I wouldn't say there's anything groundbreaking about it, but that's perfectly fine. Singularity is a great shooter and I didn't uninstall it after finishing--I just might play it again soon! The game reminds me a little bit of the FEAR series. If you like that series, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this, too.
