Many other reviews of this game covered anything I'd want to say, but will simply add that this influential, consequential classic raised the bar and set the stage for Dishonored, Prey and so many others. Aside from the environments, there are parallels to System Shock 2 in design and this is one I've loved since its release day. In present day, The Dark Mod carries on this traditions.
I really enjoyed the thoughtful, faithful re-creation the developers have built. I been a video gamer since Pong was first released (I'm strictly PC player now) and played the original SS when it came out--this looks like I saw it in my head way back in 1994! The look and feel bodes well for capturing the original's atmosphere, the pipe & sparq weapons have weight to them so I was immersed after leaving the 'closet'! I've played the original and several DOSbox versions and I want to play this one all the way through right now. I ran through the demo a few times and grew more anxious that I couldn't continue playing each time! That is a great sign! As with any reboot there are bound to be comparisons to the original, but this one may suffer unfairly because the original influenced SO MANY games that came after it. Not just its lineage (System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Bioshock, etc.) but its spiritual successors, including Half Life, Dead Space and the rebooted Fallout series. Due to the incredible feat of design by Looking Glass & Origin in 1994 some elements may seem 'been there-done that' to many. But give credit where it's due! Nightdive will certainly be seeing my money and I'm recommending this every one I know and to you, dear reader, too!
