Requiem: Avenging Angel

Not Half Life With Magic.

Really not sure why people are saying that apart from some guilty pleasure nostalgia. Apart from maybe the idea, I can't think of a single good thing to say about this game. Awful visuals even for its time, terrible level design, awful sound effects, cringe story and high difficulty for all the wrong reasons in a way that makes blood 2 look good. Not the worst shooter I've played but it's up there.

Immortal Redneck

Mediocre mix of serious sam x roguelite

This is what happens when you mix serious sam with a roguelite and it does neither of those things well. I never understood the appeal of these games, going through the same slightly different boxy room and corridors over and over again. All while dying over and over again just to be able to get the stats and bonuses to be able to get through a run... assuming RNG doesn't screw you. But unfortunatly these are still the rage and Indie devs love them as they require much less effort than something that was hand crafted from start to finish. But even if it were a proper hand crafted game, it doesn't change the fact that the music is dull, the visuals are bland, the weapons aren't fun to use and the story (what little there is) Is told via the usual lazy indie way of talking slideshows. Oh, and the character you play as is obnoxious. The only positive thing I can say about it is that it is functional and stable. It isn't awful but its nothing special or even good.

Radio Commander - Complete Edition

Interesting idea but mediocre execution

A very interesting and unique take to strategy games in a setting thats underused. The narrative is surprisingly good for a game that has you staring at a map all day and can be rather tense while waiting for engagments to resolve. Unfortunately the game feels more like a puzzle than strategy and engagements feel like rng than anything else. Most of the time you're working with and against infantry so when you do get heavy assets it again feels like a puzzle on how you're supposed to use them to keep the infantry alive. Not being able to lose ANY units doesn't help. The dlc is also a neat idea that was porly implimented. Because the game is so short it feels like a waste of time to try and micromanage units, and again, since you're main asset is the 3 infantry units, promoting troops from other teams feels like a waste and really should have been in the base game. Overall, its a unique experience with a good narrative but could have been so much more.

Forgive Me Father

A stylish lovecraftian shooter

This is what happens when you cross XIII with Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth with blood sprinkled on top. Pretty tough and brutal, like a shooter like this should be. There are a few issues that keep it from beeing great though. Resources late game become a little too scarce, max ammo is too low for some weapons even with all the upgrades, the skill tree is flawed (why do i have to upgrade the second skill fully to max out ammo) and the last chapter of the game really feels like a slog. other than that, a pretty good old school shooter with style.

Tormented Souls

A classic survival horror done right

Finally, an indie classic survival horror thats actually good and not a broken/ unbalanced mess like the others. A bit of a slow burn at first, even for the genre but it does pick up. Visuals and sound do a great job of replicating the look atmosphere of those games before RE4 ruined it. Its not scary per say, but it is creepy. Controlls like it should, gives just enough ammo and health to get the job done and the few bugs I encountered aren't game breaking. Biggest issue I have is some of the later puzzles get really obtuse to the point where they feel like they were made for dedicated puzzle games like myst, and that they just barely give enough hint for those experienced at those games to get it and everyone else will need a guide. Other than that, it could have really used a bit more enemy variety and another weapon or 2. Story is a bit predictable rolling on the ancient myistcal cult trope but its got some twists to keep it interesting. Better than the virus/biolab trope though. Great classic that does a good job of replicating og resident evil with some silent hill sprinkled on.

Realms of the Haunting

The worst of adventure and fps games

An interesting blend of FPS and point and click gameplay with a fairly unique story that I really wanted to like. Unfortunately it brings out the absolute worst of those 2 genres. The FPS side has some really bad level design later in the game, to the point where some of them are litteral mazes. On the adventure side it has some of the worst developer logic puzzles ive seen in a while to the point where I was constantly having to consult a guide. something i didn't have to so in the first half. By the time I was done it just left a bad taste in my mouth and I have no desire to replay it. Which is a real shame as the closest thing that comes to it is the original system shock. Oh, and for what ever reason gog didn't use the US version. Instead you have to manually patch it to have much needed keybinding options and difficulty selection.

Crime Cities

Another failed descent clone

Bad controls, a broken hud, bad visuals, very unbalanced gameplay, bad leven design... you name it. While the idea of blade runner crossed with descent was interesting, the many issues and poor gameplay make this a hard pass and Overload is still the only descent clone to actually get it right.

AMID EVIL

Blows Dusk Out Of The Water

Coming from someone that never played Heratic/Hexen and doesn't really care for western fantasy, this is one of the best "New boomer shooters" I've played. Very creative with its world and level design with brutal enemies and frantic encounters make it both a pleasure to both play and sit back and admire the scenery. Only negatives i can point to are minor. Absolutely surpasses Dusk in every way and the only new boomer shooter that I would say is better is Ion Fury.

The Talos Principle: Gold Edition

Better Than Portal

TP is a first person puzzle game, like the portal series, but with a much deeper story. The atmosphere is great. The feeling of isloation and being alone while trying to solve the puzzles and understand what is going on and figure out what happened to those that came before you. I won't go into to much detail, but you signed up for a puzzle game and while you do get that you also get a deep probe of the human mind. The athmosphere of the game is also excelent. While a bit restrictive, much like portal 1, it does a great job of both feeling mysterious and opressive. The sound design and voice acting are also excelent. As for the puzzles, they get the job done but do get repetative due to relying on just a few basic mechanics (Also like portal 1) but the game doesn't outstay its welcome despite that. As for the DLC... I wasn't a big fan of it, as the story was far less interesting to me and was just an excuse to crank the difficulty up. Its not bad or anything, just more tedious than worth the payoff if you aren't a master of the lasers. But Make no mistake The Talos Principal is a must have for anyone who likes solving puzzles or deep stories.

Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi

A lost and often overlooked horror game

Sort of a psudo rougelike, though with out the permadeath. The layout of the castle stays consistant, but the placement of npcs, enemies and items will mostly change between playthoughs. There is an interesting blend of supernatural weapons and old fire arms to combat the humanoid and more etherial enemies. Its not particularly scary, but it does have good atmosphere. It was also interesting how the game won't force you to save all the humans, but will heavily encourage it, as every human that dies will make the final boss stronger. That said it is janky, ugly (even for its time) and short, but for its price you could do worse.
