So after checking out reviews here, I remembered where I saw this game first posted. Steam. Which has become over laden with unintuitive, wantonly poor, sexual related "games" that aren't even actual games. Some of the Old School "adult" games, that are more satire (Leisure Suit Larry and the like), are pretty hilarious and have their place in a GoG library. Even things like Duke Nukem 3D, which caused massive upheaval upon release, were tame at worst. However, I wonder where the path that Indiegala and some other sites have headed down, will lead to. Probably more negative than good. If GoG wants to keep its fanbase, and develop a community with their investments into pretty solid IPs and their own, relatively fun Galaxy interface, they may want to reconsider having things that will make their main advert page NSFW, and weed out all the true fans in lieu of slavering porn addicts.
While I oft do very few reviews, SS2 requires me to hail its glory. It was not only the first FPS-RPG I ever played, but also the first game to ever actually make me tense and jumpy. The audio and timing are perfect for its intentions, and unlike the F.E.A.R. series, doesn't become predictable. The Dark Engine used for the game isn't perfect, shiny, and readily able to be HD updated, but really, that would only take away from its classic survival-horror atmosphere. And being such an old game, it will run well on pretty much any old system you have laying around. Besides, how many classic FPS-RPGs have co-op capabilities? Albeit the Deus Ex series holds a close place in my futuristic FPS-RPG loving heart, System Shock 2 still makes me glance around at just a thought in its regard. Worth your hard earned cash. I am not usually into point-&-clicks, but these are nearly, if not the best 2 I have ever played. The sarcasm, insults, innuendo, and humor are all perfect. Puzzles are challenging, but unlike some adventure games, you dont have to use a magnifying glass to see tiny nuances that you MUST find to complete them. And most of the solves are pretty sensible. I recommend this set.
The reason being that if you get too big for your pantaloons, the game will take you down a notch. It will actually slam you every 3 min with an epidemic, and cost you 12-20k a pop. Otherwise the graphics are awesome, even for being so old, gameplay has some realism with a toss of humor, and controls are relatively simple. Spread out your floor plans, take your time, and this will be one of your favorite games of all time. ALSO: I had a problem with graphic corruption, there is a file in your main installation folder called Launch Graphic Mode Setup that you must run to change the necessary settings. Fixed mine right up. Phenom II 1100T, Radeon 6950 2Gb.
As is common with many adventure games, there will be those items that go together, that shouldn't go together. Things that don't make a bit of sense in reality, and they cause much angst in your eventual wanderings of near aimlessness. You know what I'm talking about, fellow adventurers. This game though does a very good job at weeding that garbage out. Not to say it isn't there, but most of the things you will need to focus on are noted in the conversations etc, as they would be were someone giving you instructions in real life, instead of, "Well, you need to go do something, no idea how you're going to do it, have fun!" Similar quotes are equivocally placed in most adventure games at one point. Thus its nice to see, in addition to the awesome graphics and vocals, that Telltale has done something that doesn't make a person want to slam their head into a wall until they have an aneurysm. Hugs Telltale.
There are people who have never heard of Descent? Yes, yes there are. Having played, and still owning all 3 Descent games and every disc ever made for them I have some experience with them. If you feel bound by the normal FPS movement systems, give them a try. The only downfall I've seen, is if you or friends get motion sickness, you will likely want to stay away from the series. I have seen Coop players lose their lunch.
This of course is a personal opinion, but I don't care for this title. Not that if you like the genre, I wouldn't recommend buying it on GoG, but its not for everyone. Hopefully this is a simple rundown that will help you make an informed decision. Pros: For having a nice indie-low-budget feel, the environments and characters are quite detailed. The storyline is very in depth, and if you like reading your games as you would a fantasy novel, you will get right into it. Easy to start up and go: unlike some RPGs you can be into the game with very little nit-picking of stats etc. Very clean on every front build wise. I have it on Android and Windows, everything runs without a hitch. Cons: Loads of reading. I'm all for a good storyline, but I was doing way more reading then playing. Turn-based battling, with so much story detail, I would rather have the movement and battles real-time, to compensate one another. Slow progression makes for aggravation, and takes away from victories because of the all too common "Well, finally got there..." Overall: If you enjoy reading, and have unlimited time on your hands to truly become part of your RPG experience, Avadon is for you. If you don't like reading or want a game in which results of your actions can be seen near to the timeframe of when those actions were implemented, or want something Diablo 3ish graphically, save your cash for something else.
