I have no familiarity w/ this series beyond some screenshots (from various entries) and I wanted to see if this game was as good as people make it out to be. Fortunately it was! It's a very simplified ARPG (only 4 stats, handful of equipment slots, straight-forward combat) but I think it works to the game's benefit. The simple structure makes any improvements to your character feel meaningful and I enjoyed experimenting with all sorts of Spells. The mood and atmosphere (bolstered by an exceptional soundtrack) is what really ties it together though. The combat can look silly but an oppressive presence hangs over you the whole time you're within the dungeon. I wouldn't call it 'scary' but it certainly instills some sense of dread as you turn corners and shuffle into dark halls. Makes sense why it's so well-regarded, even as time passes on! It's not too unintuitive for a modern audience (the manual helps you out quite a bit) so I think it's worth trying. My only big problem is that Fireball totally mogs every other Spell (except Chain Lightning sometimes) that once I got it, it felt silly to use anything else but I was still enjoying my time.
