Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition

Oblivion with guns, now without GfWL

I have the boxed version of Fallout 3 myself, as well as 4 of the 5 dlc's. Couldn't get the 5th one due to that dreaded Games for Windows Live. Fallout 3 was released with that garbage, which was a turnoff. I waited a bit before buying fallout 3, since it got negative responses from people. Still decided to buy it anyway in the end. People were right about one though; Fallout 3 is actually just TES IV: Oblivion, but then with guns. It uses the same engine, gamebryo. It features the holding-your-hand approach, it has fast travel and direction markers (i hate those) to put you in the right direction. And no option to turn them off. Despite that it is a nice game to play. When i started playing some years ago i made a char and went through the whole tutorial section. First you are born and you stay for a while in the vault. Then after some time you get your G.E.C.K., you turned into an adult and sudently your father is missing. Your adventure begins. First you need to get past the overseer. The way you do that has consequences later on. There are also some other problems which you can solve. Once out of the Vault a barren area awaits you, Welcome to the capital wasteland. Unfortunately just like Oblivion this game is holding your hand. Ok, a bit lesser and it is harder then Oblivion, but you are still directed in the right way. Personally i hate that. My first stop was Megaton, which is nearby the vault you left. Interesting town. I played then the vanilla version, meaning without any mods. There weren't much made by then. Now you can get dozens over at nexus. After playing for some time, getting even dogmeat (your own dog) i quit then. The game itself is nice to play, has a nice scenery, interesting places and characters. However, it feels like it's actually oblivion with guns. And that games for windows live didn't help as well. Still decided to buy it again here on gog (with discount), because it doesn't have gfwl anymore. It ain't a bad game, but not great.

Sacred 2 Gold

The last trick of Ascaron Entertainment

Sacred 2 Fallen Angel was the last game that German developer Ascaron Entertainment made. During the development of the expansion Ice & Blood they filled in for bankruptcy and are now gone. The rights went to Deep Silver, which ain't a good thing. They decided to drop support for Sacred 2, came up with this Citadel garbage and later with Sacred 3, which is nothing like the games of Ascaron. Sacred 2 itself is a good game and definitely not a bad game, as even stated in a gogmix. It has a history of bugs yes and until Ascaron fixed it with patch 1.34 it was a bugfest. I've bought myself the dvd version and later also bought the expansion. Sacred 2 differs from it's predecessor Sacred 1 and Underground. It's a prequel to the first game. The style also got changed. Where Sacred 1 liked alot like Diablo, Sacred 2 is more 3D and also more rpg. It is still a hack 'n slash rpg. When starting you pick one of the five fixed characters and the expansion adds a sixth one. Every character is unique, even their lines and voices. You will also have the ability to ride an unique mount for each char. There are tons of quests and enough loot to pick. However, the drops could have been better. And some sidequests are annoying, especially escort quests (most annoying is hold up, which even starts as you approach). Atmosphere is great and every region is also unique. It has great music made by Blind Guardian. There is this time a shared stash, which means you can swap items between chars. The expansion Ice & Blood is a faillure however. It was rushed, probably because of the bankruptcy. It even introduced new bugs to the maingame, which were never fixed by Deep Silver. There is the CM patch which fixes that. Ice & Blood adds 2 new regions and also some new mounts plus also the dragon mage. Some items got an overhaul as well. Sacred 2 is a good game, but it takes time to understand it's mechanics.

Saints Row 2

Good game, bad port

a studio called Volition came up with a Grand Theft Auto clone called Saints Row. Unfortunately, the first SR is console only and it seems it will never get a pc version. Saints Row 2 got a pc version and this is it. The pc version is a consoleport. Now it doesn't always mean that ported games are bad. However, this doesn't go up for SR2. When it got released it was a bad port. I have the steam version myself and first played it a bit without installing anything. Just download, launch and go. It was playable, to a certain hight. But when i was busy to defend my territory the game showed it's mean face. Driving cars was like as you were driving on ice. Then i learned about a mod called Gentlemen of the Row, made by IdolNinja. GotR fixes many bugs and add also extra things (such as better eyes). With GotR Saints Row 2 plays much better and looks better as well. As for the game itself; it looks alot like Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas, but you can more customize it. Also, you can choose gender. Gangwars, territory takeover, tag spray, your own crew, collectibles, houses, free roaming and alot of missions to do. Oh and you can change yourself. You play as the boss of the third street saints. You have no name and are simply called boss. During your absence the saints felt apart and there are now 3 gangs who have taken over stillwater. Actually 4, but the other ain't a gang. So time to set things right. Saints Row 2 is a great game, but it was poorly executed. When you install this game, do yourself a favor and download Gentlemen of the Row. Just like the CP saved Gothic III GotR saves Saints Row 2. http://idolninja.com/sr2.php Scroll down a bit for Gentlemen of the Row.
