I loved Elite back in the day being able to be a Han Solo type character trading, smuggling and fighting my way across the stars. In this game you still get to trade and fight like a Han Solo character, but be way more of a entrepreneur like a Lando Calrissian character. This game has all the pacing of 2001 A Space Odyssesy the movie, as in a very slow burner, but worth it.
Well I realized something playing this one After beating great games like Dead Space and Bio-Shock years ago playing this one recently. I realized how much this game must of heavily influenced those ones. I can't say I really enjoyed the dated clunky gameplay, but however I did enjoy the atmosphere and story.
Straight forward accessible turn based modern military squad based strategy title. Three fun game modes and plenty of maps to game. Progression based squad upgrades, with a decent choice of gear and weapon customization (perma-death optional). Yeah I know it is not deep or complex, but I found it a lot of addictive fun nevertheless. I enjoyed the squad managing strategy phase planing. Then watching with a sense of tense anticipation the execution of each planned move. Like if it was going to be fist pump good one or a facepalm fail bad one. I just instantly liked that sense of not knowing the outcome and that is probably the main reason was why I liked this one so much.
I was more impressed by the actual concepts behind the game than the actual game itself. Nothing like that initial charge riding on a horse into battle while commanding archers, foot soldiers and cavalry on the fly. Sadly stiff animations with limited moves made the actual combat dull and uninspiring. The rest of the overall game is such cookie cutter rinse and repeat formula. So just think of the base game as a modders resource, because all the fun is in the community mods. Even for all it's flaws and limitation this is still a unique experience.
