If you prefer games that are 99% not game and involve only reading and changing outfits, this graphical book was made for you. I prefer games with some game to them. If the premise of this game interests you, but you are looking for a game with game in it, I highly suggest Torment and HeroU,
I highly prefer games with more game to them. This game is 90% reading and 5% finding items and 5% time management. There is no combat. It does what it tries to do well, so if you want a CYOA type adventure game with some replay value this game should appeal to you. If you are looking for a PST, TToN type game with all the combat and other systems and game stuff replaced by more reading this game is right up your ally. But if you were hoping for an rpg game with a lot of game in addition to reading like PST or TToN you may be highly disappointed as I am.
The base game is one of the best crpgs to come out in the last couple decades. A true successor to FO 1 and 2 style crpgs. This expansion is massive and adds a lot of content. An actual, real expansion. My only criticism is that it is an expansion and not a sequel. And that the devs are so, so so, so, so, so, so annoyingly slow at releasing games. What the release is gold, but I doubt their next game will come out before 2099. This is a must buy for all true crpg fans with quality taste. Its not up for debate. Underrail is the litmus test of if you like crpgs or not. If you are reading reviews to see if you should buy this, without knowing in your core being you have no choice but to buy this, you are a broken person with a broken mind.
Gog is usually good about correctly labeling games. Since I can't get a refund from Gog, I can only rate the game I now possess as an rpg. It isn't, so I can't give more than one star as it completely failed at being what it was mislabeled as. I readily admit this could be a great mission based squad tactics game with extremely lite and superficial rpg elements, but not in the vein of games in that genre I like such as JA2 and XCom. Or even that Omen game that was released not that long ago Maybe in the Final Fantasy Tactics sense? I don't like those types of games and am no expert on them so maybe. Its one of those games where enemies drop life heart things, etc. You get extra rewards for certain mission conditions like not getting hit or opening all chests. Again, this could be a great whatever genre game it is and you could love it to death so only take my review into consideration if you want an rpg experience. Honestly, if gog had a refund window I would just return and not review since this game is clearly not for me.
This game has units, not characters. It has no real rpg elements outside of lite unit development. The combat is not really involved or good. I just don't understand the popularity. I love some non-rpg games such as Jagged Alliance 2 (especially with 1.13) and X-Com type games - this game is more like them than an actual rpg, but worse in every conceivable way. It has no actual content. You get a contract and go get in one fight and go back. Its extremely simplistic and sophomoric. Its some new age hipster bate that offers nothing to anyone looking for a deep and involved game experience with rpg elements. I group it with other hipster games with units like Darkest Dungeons that people claim are rpgs, or FTL. It plays a little like Low Magic Age or Monster's Den, except with units instead of characters and no dungeons. I also did not like Low Magic Age or Monster's Den personally, but at least I can understand why people would consider them to be rpgs or like them. If you disagree with me thats fine. People like what they like. But I would much rather prefer actual reasons and logic versus just pure name-calling.
The game had way better, tougher, and tactical combat than IWD. The 3e system implementation wasn't the best, but was light years beyond 2e. It has actually good chardev, which is necessary for me in any game. It had great quests and areas, great everything. Though the combat was far superior than any of the other IE games, it is still crappy RTwP. That's really the only negative. If you are the type of person that thinks they like crpgs but would rather play a game that is a story told to you, rather you it simulating your character(s) making a story, I would stick to the other IE games (besides the original IWD too).
