The Bard's Tale IV: Director's Cut - Standard Edition

Fun game with great music and balance

Bard's Tale 4: Director's Cut is the most fun I've had in a RPG for quite some time. Personally, I love the combat system and the "theatre" representation. I appreciate the thought put into many aspects of the game such as re-spec'ing or saving. Regarding saves, you can either choose at the beginning to allow ad hoc Saves (save scumming) or play more hard core and only save at specific locations (these are fairly numerous too). For re-specing, if you could just do it anytime you wanted, it would cheapen the experience and make the game less meaningful/immersive. Instead, they grant you mercenary tokens after completing major quests. You can use these to either re-spec a character or to buy a new mercenary that will be leveled up to whatever you are currently at (i.e. he/she will be useful). I found the classes, races, and skills to be well-balanced and not at all overwhelming. By the end of the game, you will have been able to choose most of skills you wanted to or you can always re-spec. I forgot to mention that if you have the DLC, you will be able to buy mercenary tokens and you will have a lot of money by then so basically you will be able to re-spec at will. The DLC by the way is by far the hardest bosses and best loot in the game but also a lot of fun. Lastly, the music, as mentioned by others is outstanding - just great songs sung by very talented artists from Scotland. There is also a lot of humour in the game. Anyway, I found the game to be very fun and enjoyable and really appreciate the thought put into the design.
