Clever and not to be underestimated

Got this a while ago, just because I'm a chemist and it seemed like an interesting idea. Very fun game, well-executed and well-presented. The trailer makes it look pretty simple - just slide atoms around to make molecules. DON'T BE FOOLED - the difficulty ramps up very quickly, later levels will keep you occupied for quite a while.

Shattered Haven

Just isn't fun

Full disclosure: I only played this game for about an hour before uninstalling it. After clearing a section, accidentally pushing the D-pad to go back to that section, and not finding an option to leave the section without replaying it, I had had enough. Maybe it picks up later, but in that first hour, there wasn't much that made me want to keep playing. Gameplay is pretty basic - run around, pick up items, use them to attack zombies or lay traps that zombies will run into or open new areas in which to kill more zombies, repeat. Different areas give you different items but they're mostly superficial variations of the same idea. Had high hopes for this after generally enjoying Bionic Dues, another quirky offering from Arcen, but Shattered Haven didn't work for me.

Trippy fun while it lasts

Shoot-em-up with levels procedurally generated by your music library. And you can definitely tell how the music impacts the level and what songs are likely to be more or less hard. Weapon drops and ship customization are nice - there's enough for you to have fun with but not so much that you get bogged down in things other than the shooty action. Boss fights are interesting and provide a nice change of pace. After about 4-5 hours you'll have probably beaten the final boss and seen most of what it has to offer. You can keep playing through the rest of your song library, but the novelty starts to wear out for all but the diehards. Even if you don't play beyond the main story, it should give you enough fun to be worth the price of admission.

Only for the patient

3rd person adventure/exploration with a lot of atmosphere, but shoddy level design led to a lot of frustration for me. Typically, games like this give you a lot of freedom to explore but some gentle hints on where you might want to go next. No such hints here - you're in for a lot of backtracking all over trying to find new passages or souls (which you need to advance.) The awful lighting (even with monitor at max brightness) and bland textures also make it hard at times to tell doorways and important features from walls. Wanna use a walkthrough to spare yourself some frustration? Well, it crashes after alt-tabbing for me. To top it off, the controls are a little tricky - not so bad, except that there are lots of hard jumps with instant death for failing. It kinda grows on you, and might be worth it if you want something weird or have nostalgia for the N64 version. Hard to recommend to anyone else.
