Locomotion, Chris Sawyer's

Usability at its worst

I've played the game for about an hour and cannot take it anymore. - The controls of building roads or tracks are maddening. Especially trying to rework existing tracks is just a huge pain. - The train signals are bare bones at best and do not seem to work reliably (but that might be a me problem) - You cannot look at town buildings to see how many passengers/mail they produce or what they accept - To build a station you first need to lay down some tracks. So you cannot easily see what a station accepts/produces - There is no in-game display of the goods cycle - There are many inconsistencies in the UI and many actions feel like the require one or two click too many to accomplish On the plus side: - Once the tracks are down they look quite beautiful and seem far more organic than in Transport Tycoon - The graphics themselves are nice - The music, while largely the same style as in Transport Tycoon is still good - I love the inclusion of scenarios

Outwars

Loved it as a kid cannot get into it now

I loved this game as a kid and wanted to try it again. I love the vibe of the game. The graphics are serviceable. You can get a better looking game by adding dgVoodoo2. Some people reported that they even got the videos working which are black for me (using a non-modded game). The gameplay is rather clunky and nothing you would write home about. Strafing is painful so you rely on trying to block line-of-sight and the jet pack to evade enemy fire.

Streets of Rage 4

Peak Beat'em'up

This title has it all. Many modes, lots of stages, all the characters you could want (even Roo!).

SteamWorld Heist II

So close but still very enjoyable

This game feels like an evolution of the first game. However, it spread it in every direction so at times it feels a lot less focused. On the positive side there is the combat. It is still so much fun. I also felt like developing the characters with classes felt very satisfying.Mixing different classes is just plain fun. There is one thing that has been expanded but that I don't care about. And that is the open world exploration. It is serviceable but I think the game would be better without it. But that is just an opinion. Sadly there are also a few things that I really do not like: - The game is way too long. Cutting about a third would have saved the game from feeling like a chore. - I really disliked the last world. It looks so bleak and is difficult to navigate at times. Mission difficulty varies a lot. It does not really feel as if the developers had any ideas left and resorted to spawning more enemies - I would really like to change the zoom level. In my opinion it's too close. - Why does the game insist on moving the viewport after each shot? This makes targeting follow up shots difficult - If you care about a good story skip this game. It is there but that's about it. I started reading everything but gave up about halfway into the game. It's boring and completely predictable. I stopped playing about halfway through the last world. In the end it was just too much of a chore but I had lots of fun getting there.

Hot Brass

Swat4 in 2d

This is basically what SWAT4 or Ready Or Not are; boiled down to two dimensions. This is not a pure action game. You have to follow the rules of engagement of a regular police force. The graphics seem simple but make sure that the game is perfectly readable at any time. I like the sound and the music is serviceable. We played the game in local multiplayer many times and enjoyed every minute.

Rune Classic

Great game, especially coop...

Back when the game was released I played it using a coop mod. It's a blast! Link: www.fileplanet.com/61323/60000/fileinfo/RUNE-Co-Op-Mod-V1.2-(Windows) The game has a fresh setting, good graphics (back then) and offers a great variety of different settings. I've always liked the level design: there are some puzzles and sometimes you have to look carefully for where to go next. The action is pretty straight forward: You have three different weapon categories: axes, swords and maces. When using a single-handed weapon you also get to use a shield (very handy especially when you're new to the game). With these you hack and slash your way through the enemies which range from simple bugs to other vikings and beings from the north mythology. If I remember correctly the AI is rather smart and a good challenge. The graphics is plain old Unreal engine (v1), should run flawlessly on almost any system. Sound is decent with no particular highs or lows. Although, I recall the voice acting to be rather good. Other than the coop mod I have not tried the PVP. People told me it's great fun and with the addon included you should have tons of multiplayers maps. (UnrealEd is supplied as well, so you can make your own maps if you chose to).
