Mafia: Definitive Edition

Great story, dated gameplay

Because this game's story has a smaller scale than other games, it's able to flesh out its characters and let big story moments breath, which makes for an excellent experience. Acting, writing, pacing; it's all great. The graphics are also respectable, though there are some artifacts. There's noticable pop-in, taller buildings sometimes take too long to render, there is not as much detail in the city as you would expect from a modern game. That being said, there are moments in the game that are beautiful and you get a sense that it captures the feeling of the time. The gameplay is where this game cannot hide it's age. I never played the original, but the game play leaves much to be desired. The gunplay isn't quick and responsive, the cover system is not optimized like other games (gears of war), the enemy AI is hit or miss. The mission structure is varied, which does a lot to help in this area. Overall, I can see why the original was so successful and beloved by fans and critics alike, money well spent!
