GWENT: The Witcher Card Game

Average Card Game - Uncertain Identity

The game is average by itself. Judging by what it became it is an ok experience. The game felt fresh before because it was a different card game experience, now, their's not much to make it stand out. It feels generic, which is not a good thing for a Witcher game with such beautiful art and such an interesting base with its universe and game idea. It lacks polish and creativity in my opinion and that is where it fails to stand out. Homecoming added interesting mechanics that are not fully developed and the ones already established in the 2 year Beta are heavily diminished. The game doesn't feel complete or thoroughly explored, and for an announced "full release" after a long development that is a heavy misstep. The strategic depth is missing because it limits the very essentials of the base game of Gwent (card advantage, interesting abilities, witcher lore, faction identity, and much more) and it doesn't embrace what it tries to add to this new game. It feels like a mixed experience that is unsure if it wants to break out of the mold and be an original card game that embraces its essentials (like before) or if it wants to be a new take on the already known CCG mechanics (now). This is further represented by the current approach from the Team because since the official release it still feels like they are not clear on what direction to take. Big changes to the base game keep coming (and have been announced to continue) even though we were supposed to get a final established product to expand upon after 2 years of Beta. As much of the reviews here, I agree, Gwent Beta was a hell of a game (5/5) and by far the most fun card game I've ever played (My main account is on my PS4 and there I played almost every day for the last 2 and a half years), but this one has a long long way to go to be special. This game is a Beta, not a full release, and it needs a ton of work to be good.
