Diplomacy is Not an Option

Beautiful yet boring

RTS is hard genre to compete and this a competent game under many aspects. The presentation is beautiful and interesting while the gameplay is competent. However, this game commits the ultimate sin: it is boring. The dificulty of the game is high and expects you to make fasts decisions yet you are constantly blocked by its pacing. You are always waiting... waiting for lumber to build up... waiting for population to grow... waiting for gold to be traded... A trial of patience. Even the cutscenes (as stylistical as they are) are so slow and boring. Even your "avatar" is bored the whole time. They don't really pump you for the next mission. On top of that, this game has already crashed on me a couple of times. And because it's so slow I am not waiting for the next one.

STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™ II: The Sith Lords™

Deception. A Sith's tool... maybe

Yeah, that is basically the idea. The KotOR franchise has had many fans over the years and I was hyped to try and review the second instalment. I have fond memories of the first one but I don't think it's a masterpiece and like KotOR 2 it has aged poorly. Some may point out to the restoration mode. However, this is a review of the game not the mod. - Just running the software is a pain in the ass. I wanted to check if I could run this on Linux and just couldn't make it work. On windows, bugs are EVERYWHERE. To the point where you never know if something that happened was intended. The game will randomly decide to skip all dialog without warning. It will prevent you from moving at random points forcing you to reload (no, it has nothing to do with the FPS). Tearing and jiterring are part of the experience. Just plain awful. - The gameplay is rather lucklaster. Combat doesn't feel neither tactical nor engaging. The RPG elements are its only saving grace but they feel so antiquated and uninteresting. The biggest problems are the buffs. They are incredibly powerful but all the animations take forever and expire in no time. You constantly have to stop and reapply all the buffs which is just plain boring. And the companion AI... better left unsaid. - The story is such a terrible mess... Kreia and the whole theme of how the force has a will of its own is very interesting but all the other characters are incredibly boring and unappealing. Like how do you make HK-47 so boring? Also who is is G0-T0 and why does the game insinuate I should care? I just feel this game wasted my time and that I enjoyed very little of it. Replay it? No, thanks.
