*Intro* This is a 2,5D platforming game in which you ride a bike through levels and jump/destroy obstacles. *The Good* - It's pretty. - Neat idea... i guess. *The Bad* - Easy to die. - You constantly have to drive slowly to avoid obstacles/wait for energy to refill (you need it to cut obstacles to earn cash). - Pointless clumsy elevators. - Obstacles are sometimes hard to see. *The Ugly* I don't think you could come up with worse controls if you tried. Seriously, here's a simple overview: Up - accelerate Down - decelerate/reverse A/D - rotate bike in air Shift - Enable cutting wheel + speed up Ctrl - turn around W/S - Up/Down (on screen) Space - Jump To turn a corner neatly you have to press Up + W/S + Ctrl. Right middle finger + left middle finger + left pinky to turn? It feels so unnatural it breaks my brain. *Conclusion* Instead of being a badass biker you constantly have to struggle with the controls and drive extremely carefully and slowly to avoid breaking your bike or wait for energy to refill. Seriously, if you jump over an obstacle you can destroy that means you don't get cash (in this game junk is cash) for upgrades. What a bizarre design choice. Maybe if the controls were a bit better, turning was automatic and cutting didn't require waiting constantly this would've been passable but now it's just frustrating.
This is a point & click adventure made by a Polish studio back in 1994. There is no manual, so if you want to see for yourself how bizarre it is here are the controls: - Left-click: look - Right-click: use - F4: menu There is an unskippable intro that takes several minutes. And i literally mean unskippable, you have to sit through it every time you start the game. Afterwards the actual game starts and i'm pretty sure it was written by aliens. You have to bribe soldiers with a kaleidoscope and a magazine? To get a cup of mud you have to make yourself fall in the mud? The list goes on and on. There's no way you can actually complete this game without a walkthrough, unless you're an alien too. The game is actually fairly amusing but that doesn't make up for its flaws. I've played Warcraft 1 & 2, Dune 2 and other really old RTS games and i still couldn't deal with War Wind. Something about the way units move and act feels "wrong". Collecting resources is really clunky. And all the commands are hidden in a popup menu with vague icons. It's all too iffy. Which is a shame because it seems really cool with the four different factions and all.
The platforming is bad. It's really imprecise and the hard landings after every single jump completely kill any momentum. Combat is pretty bad too, although i enjoyed the frogs chasing you. Level design is really bad, lots of places where falling down makes you redo too much of the level. On the plus side, the boomerang-dagger is fun the few times it does work and i enjoyed the goofy elevators. Seriously though, don't bother with this, it compares poorly even to contemporary or older platformers like Prince of Persia or Super Mario.
It's Descent. You fly around in some caves, collect powerups/weapons and fight enemy robots. There's a limited variety in weapons (at least in the demo) but the dodging/shooting is smooth. Other than that it all feels rather dated. Secret rooms, keys, stuff like that. It feels a bit too 90s.
This game didn't work before but it does now, though i had to use Borderless Gaming to get it to not be 480p. It's a point-and-click adventure based on a Polish movie, and unless you're Polish you probably won't get it. For instance, you start out with an item called a "goaler" in your inventory. A what? The game also requires you to find very, very specific spots on the screen where you can find hidden items that are in no way indicated or logically placed.
This a roguelike 2D platformer/brawler. You move between small areas filled with chests, enemies, bosses and shrines. You fight enemies with melee weapons and magic, or by launching things into them/them into things. Death is permanent. There are no permanent upgrades and only a few different characters to choose from (only 2 unlocked from the start). The gameplay is okay but not tight enough for me. I also have zero interest in constantly starting from scratch, fighting the same starting enemies over and over again.
*Pro* - Gorgeous visuals. - Well-balanced difficulty. - Great voice-acting. *Con* - Checkpoints are often poorly placed, and dialogue is repeated every time. - The concept of The Rat's maze is moronic, no one could survive that. - Occasional bugs. - A few times it's unclear how to progress. - Shouting mechanic feels pointless (used 2-3 times). - Sometimes hard to tell if objects are in the foreground or not. - Stupid ending. *Conclusion* Deadlight is one of those rare (PC) platformers with really great production value. While it has a number of minor flaws and i almost gave up on it out of frustration once or twice, it is certainly worth playing - even if you're not a big fan of platformers.
